A Huffington Post article recently pleaded its case to bring back the classic cocktail party. I have to agree, this kind of gathering is a lost art. A group of friends, dressed up in finery, with some mixed drinks and quiet, meaningful conversation. The modern cocktail party is herding your friends into a local bar, spend a small fortune on drinks, scream over the pumping music and stare at your phones most of the night. Sound familiar? Suddenly, the cocktail party of yesterday sounds a bit more tempting.
Plenty of my friends already get together for our favorite shows whether it’s Game of Thrones or Dr. Who and I think that’s the key. Take regular sci-fi or fantasy show night and dial it up a notch. Instead of a fancy ball gown, dress up as your favorite hero or villain, some light snacks, a specialized drink or two and voilà, a cocktail party! No, a “Costail” Party!
I have been hearing lots of good things about Arrow. My editor has been begging me to get my behind in gear to watch it (Editor’s Note: Yes, this is true. If the badass fight scenes and great character development don’t entice you, this should). I figure this would be a good chance for me to get acquainted with the characters and gathered some aptly themed cocktails from the interweb for this Arrow-themed “Costail” Party.
1.5 oz Blue Curacao / 0.5 oz ice or 4 cubes of ice / 1.0 oz lemon juice (half a lemon) / 0.5 oz lime juice (half a lime) / 1.5 oz Tequila – Mix together and pour into a Mason jar or large glass.
1.0 oz bourbon whiskey / 1.0 oz cherry liqueur / 1.0 oz cream or milk / A dash of triple sec – Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake then strain into an old-fashioned glass.
1.5 oz (Part) Dry Vermouth / 1.5 oz Gin / 1.5 oz Pineapple Juice / 1.5 oz Sweet Vermouth – Fill a shaker with ice cubes. Add all ingredients. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
1/3 oz Jack Daniel’s® Tennessee whiskey / 1/3 oz tequila / 1/3 oz peppermint schnapps / 3 oz chilled Coca-Cola® – Pour whiskey, tequila and peppermint schnapps into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass, fill with chilled Coca-cola.
Don’t fret if you are not a master “mixologist.” There are plenty of cocktails to fit your skill set, bar inventory and your budget. This should be not nerve racking. Get your friends involved. This is a celebration! Have fun! Worried about dressing up in a strange outfit and going out into public? No worries, I’m from New York. We call that Tuesday.
Feeling inspired? If you throw a “Costail” Party or have done so in the past, I would love to see your pictures. Send them in and I will feature them in a “Geek on the Rocks” article.
