By Lisa Fary – This episode of V, “There is No Normal Anymore”, was like drinking Bud Light while listening to Matchbox 20 and wearing the chino pants/ white tee/ cardigan combo: an exercise in lifeless predictability and blandness.

There’s no place for women in science fiction. It’s about men! Manly men! Doing manly things! For the entertainment of other men! Men viewing at home, not in their respective fictional ‘verses! But, not in a slashy way! You know what I mean!

By Lisa Fary – Damn it. Didn’t we just go over this? I really have to address this wacko female-gay ghetto idea again? Screw you and your barbaric idea of gender appropriateness! Now get your ass in the kitchen and make me a potpie. Oh, right, that’s supposed to be my job. You know, because I have a vagina and the most sci-fi piece of machinery I’m supposed to operate is the microwave.

By Lisa Fary – Even in the future, corporate intrigue isn’t all that interesting. But, throw in a space colonization and a dead woman’s mental presence in the fish population, and the story gets pretty interesting.

By Sonia Aurora – I think it’s safe to say that geeks worldwide have been looking forward to the release of District 9. I remember seeing the trailer for the first time a few months ago and thinking, Oh My God, the humans are the villains! I then did the thing I always do when I really can’t wait for the release of a movie – I try and seclude myself from the hype as much as possible. I will collect articles but hide them, run from the replay of the trailer as the date draws near (I might watch it one more time to psych myself up). The day of I save all the reviews that come out (peeking at the stars or grade, of course) and do my damndest to watch the movie the first weekend.

By Lisa Fary – When it comes to science fiction, it seems like we’re either going to wind up in a shiny utopia where no one has pockets or a grimy dystopia where machines are the enemy. With his novel Counting Heads, writer David Marusek writes of a future Earth that has room for both, depending on which socioeconomic class you fall into.

By Lisa Fary – I love it when unexpected packages show up at my door. For a second, I might let myself think it’s something form a relative I’ve forgotten about or never knew that will propel me on some worldwide adventure. Then I realize that I don’t have a passport, making such an adventure a bureaucratic nightmare. Just when I think it’s really better to stay home because I get so pissy when tired, I notice that the box is from a PR company. Adventure fantasy canceled.

“The Sky is Filled with Stars, Invisible by Day” by Sylvia Bond Whenever Sam Rockwell is in a particular movie, I notice him. Not because he himself is particularly noticeable, but because he is not. Particularly noticeable. In other words, he is a chameleon blending and melting into the characters he plays, so that I [...]

By Lisa Fary – To me, July 4th isn’t just about patriotism and pride in the United States – it’s about freedom. Freedom to live the way I want to live, believe what I want to believe. America doesn’t hold a patent on freedom, and Americans aren’t the only ones who have fought wars and died for the idea. (send your hate mail to lisa@pinkraygun.com or post a comment below. Emails will be posted for all to see). So today, I’m not going to talk about the sci-fi moments that make me proud to be an American. Instead, we’ll look at sci-fi that celebrates freedom – having it and fighting for it – for all people.

By Brian Thompson – J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek hopes to bring in a new crowd. There are muscles and budgets and acting and lead performers who aren’t AARP members. Exciting! So it’s for these people, the slackjawed masses, that I present to you the current scientific thinking on faster-than-light travel. Sorry about the slackjawed masses comment, by the way. Like any true Trekkie, I disdain you only because I covet your love.

By Rhea Dee – Alright, I’m getting a bit nervous here. Why hasn’t Fringe been renewed yet? It gets a decent amount of viewers. Leonard frickin’ Nimoy is going to be in the finale. I thought when shows did well like this they got the renewal stamp of approval immediately.
