My friends idealized the princess-damsels, though, and I played along. But, the truth was that my favorite characters in the more popular stories were the villains: the evil queens and witches who were knowledgeable and daring, who didn’t suffer stolen radishes or snubs. And it only had a little bit to do with schadenfreude.
