This Mothra costume has gotten way out of hand and I haven’t even started making it, yet.
Initially, I had these grand plans to make the following:
- A furry brown and white mini-dress
- An orange and white striped bustle
- An antennae headband with iridescent blue, faceted insect eyes attached
- Large, hand painted wings
Then I was going to learn some advanced make-up tricks to do dramatic, blue costume-y eyeshadow. With crystals! And lashes!
Yeah….This is for a house party on the next block, not a convention. I had to rethink it and tone it down.
I’m settling for wearing a black t-shirt dress I already own, abandoning Mothra’s stripes completely, and focusing on the wings as the showpiece. These are my wing options:
Modify this Martha Stewart pattern using a sheet of poly-foam between two layers of felt:
Adapt this other Martha Stewart pattern to make a set of wings that are more like a cape:
Or go old school and make Mothra’s wings out of repurposed wire hangers and painted pantyhose:
So far, I’m leaning toward the pantyhose option because it’s the most cost effective and can be made quickly.
Or I’m going to toss the idea completely, pin a jewel to the bodice of my beige Interview/Hey, I’m Totally A Responsible Adult Dress and go as an Executive Treasure Troll. I already have the hair for it.
