October is a great month to be geek. Comic-con comes to NY, The Great American Beer Festival, the biggest beer festival in the country hits Denver, and, right after that, the ultimate day of Cosplay: Halloween. If you have a Samhain party in your future or you just enjoy the macabre side of life here are some playfully wicked alcohol choices for you to enjoy.
Vodka and Walking Dead fans will enjoy Zombie Apocalypse Vodka by Braided Oaks Spirits. This 80 proof grain spirit hails from New York State and states it is “A civilized response to the undead chaos of an apocalyptic world.”
Not a fan of all that decaying flesh? Well then Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka is perfect for you. Not only is this an award-winning vodka but also the container is a clear glass skull. So when you finish the bottle, it makes a fabulous knick-knack for your coffee table or wherever you enjoy keeping your skulls. Actually, I don’t want to know.
If rum is your poison of choice, may I suggest RedRum, Voodoo Spiced Rum & Jolly Roger Coconut & Key Lime Rum by Three-D Spirits? This trio of flavored rums is the base ingredients to make fun cocktails such as the Witch Doctor, Voodoo Doll and Dead Man Drinking. Cephalopod lover? The Kraken might be the Black Spiced Rum you are looking for. I have had this rum before and it’s quite enjoyable. I highly recommend you explore The Kraken Store. They have great items like this one below: Self-adhesive wallpaper.
Sometimes, it’s best to stick to the classics, and there is nothing more classic then the master of melancholy and horror, Edgar Allen Poe. You can either enjoy a nice glass of Syrah with Lenore by Corvidae Wine or, if you like hops more than grapes, then The Poet, an oatmeal stout by New Holland Brewing Company would be right up your alley, or perhaps the Rue Morgue. Whatever drinks you chose, make sure you say a toast not only to the dark writer himself but to “The Poe Toaster” as well.
On a non-Halloween but full of dress-up side note, I will be at NY Comic-Con on Sunday, October 13th. I will be checking out the outfits, the artists and panels such as “Sleepy Hollow”. Keep a sharp lookout at your local watering hole for “The Brooklyn Defender”, a beer created by Brooklyn Brewery just for NY Comic-Con.
So stay safe and “Defend Beer!”
