Interview: Claudia Christian

By Lisa Fary – I was concerned about becoming a mass of fangirl nerves while talking to Claudia Christian. Susan Ivanova, her character on Babylon 5, is not only one of my all-time favorite women in science fiction, she was also a personal role model for me when I first took charge of a classroom. So yes, there were nerves flitting about when I called her.

Live from San Diego’s Comic-Con – Thursday

by Juliana Weiss & Josh Roessler This is the first year that Josh and I have attended Thursday at Comic-Con. This is also the first year that I have been royally pissed at Comic-Con. Connected? I don’t know. Maybe the line blows every year on Thursday to get into the Con, but after Josh and [...]

Interview: Molly Crabapple

by Teresa Jusino – I came across Molly Crabapple’s work the way I come across so many things these days – on Twitter. Someone posted a link to Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, an affordable life-drawing class with a Gilded Age feel for which one pays about ten dollars to sketch burlesque performers in scintillating poses, and I was immediately intrigued! As I explored the website for this class, which is now being franchised in cities all over the world, I became more and more interested in the creative mind behind it. Visits to her website lead to searching for her work everywhere and becoming an instant fan. She’s illustrated for clients like Marvel Comics, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Playgirl as well as eight books, including her own.

Interview: RH Stavis

By Rachel Pandich – Any fangirl (or fanboy) that has been to a “nerd” convention of any kind knows how testosterone driven they can be. The male to female ratio tends to be 10:1, or at least sometimes it feels that way. That gender gap grows when you look at just the artists, writers and creators at the booths and panels. This is why it was so refreshing when a friend pointed out a writer/creator coming up in the geek culture ranks who is a female.

Abede Lovelace: City of Walls

I met Abede Lovelace and Shaun Noel at this year’s New York Comicon where they were promoting their comic, City of Walls. The series is the story of three kids growing up in Kowloon City, an isolated and independent city formed by many conjoined buildings.

After the convention, I had the chance to talk with Abede, the comic’s creator and artist, about City of Walls and the plight of American comics.

NYCC Interview: Chloe Dykstra

By Teresa Jusino

If you go to comic conventions, you get used to seeing a lot of strange things: strange costumes, weird drawings, odd conversations about aliens or superpowers or the minutiae of cult television shows. You get so used to seeing the strange that the strange becomes normal. Half-naked anime chicks? Been there, done that. Zombies? Yeah, about 500 of them.
