Most penultimate episodes preparing for the season finale serve as a chance to build up momentum and tie all of the individual plot lines together. Devil in a Blue Dress succeeded in that regard, but that didn’t make the episode any less muddled or confusing.

I can’t talk about this episode without mentioning Hobbes and Erica’s angsty hookup. And why would I? It was the most compelling part of the episode. It was so compelling that V’s usual bout of illogic and absurdity didn’t concern me.

Turns out that the Visitors are extracting the highest quality DNA to insert into Tyler’s blank DNA spaces so when breeding occurs (ew, it’s as gross to type it as it is to hear it from Anna), the next generation of Visitors will be zillions of years more advanced.

This episode shook things up in the simplest of ways, by showing the audience negative consequences and multiple casualties as a result of the choices the Fifth Column made, specifically the impromptu hostage holdup in a warehouse full of explosives. Neat.

Concordia was great mainly because there is nothing like a good “fancy party” episode. What do I mean by that? If you notice in a lot of mystery, science fiction (unless it takes place in space or what not), and action-based TV programs, there is always at least one episode where something crazy goes down at a gala, benefit, or some lavish shindig at a mansion.

Chad Decker is the embodiment of the show’s abuse of expository scenes to move the plot along. Despite the huge step forward for his character is the previous episodes, including his introduction to the rest of the Fifth Column, his role this week was diminished to something similar to a Greek chorus, narrating and filling in plot progression through his news reports.

As of now, V is still considered “on the bubble,” meaning that it is at risk of being canceled. Even with the rocky start to the second season, I still wanted it to succeed because it provided a fun world to escape to for an hour. Now that I have seen Laid Bare, however, I very much want it to succeed because it is clear now that this show is headed in the right direction.

Anna FINALLY ate a rat! Well, technically she chewed it up and fed it to Ryan’s baby. The scene acted as a perfect homage to the iconic rat-eating scene in the original V, by passing the torch to the new series. The torch, of course, being the chewed-up rat carcass. Yum.
