This show, attempting to build on The Vampire Diaries success, just couldn’t cut it. Witches just aren’t inherently sexy the way the undead are, and adding the teen angst without a Hogwarts setting just felt rote and overly sexualized…I might be a fuddy duddy, but I really hope 16 year olds aren’t sexifying like they do on this show.

I’m amused by their teen cynicism (they start so young!) for Valentine’s Day, that Cassie refers to as the “greeting card, florist, chocolate tier industrial complex” and Faye more succinctly calls “Anti-Independence Day”.

It’s amusing how the show wants to establish Cassie as some kind of bad ass despite her kewpie doll looks and voice, but I do admire that she’s at least growing up.

This episode had so many flashes of fun – and fire – that was ruined by the end with Jake showing up. The only redemption for me was that he didn’t talk. But it also means he’s not staying away, and we’ll have to deal with his brand of bad-acting brood for the rest of the season.

It’s beginning to look as though my reviews are going to ultimately criticize the Jake character, since his introduction is meant to be an unsettling force within the Circle but it is becoming more of an annoyance and what the show is trying to make him be.
