I know I'm terribly overdue with this, the final edition of this Stargate Atlantis recap-and-review column. Part of it is due to other commitments, of course (and the lure of other fandoms, like Underworld), but there's also the simple fact of this being then end. I'm reluctant to say goodbye, coupled with the odd conundrum of not being satisfied enough with the finale to have been eager to watch it again. Creature of dichotomy, me.

I feel like I'm suffering from Bipolar Disorder when watching this Rob Cooper-penned episode: I both love and dislike aspects of it at the same time. Happily, though, while I don't count it as an all-time fave exactly, there's never a point where I actually hate it. But I haven't felt this conflicted over an entire episode of something since the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

I have to admit, I was braced for this one to be a terrible experience, considering that it's another episode where Keller is both a fairly major player (though thankfully not until the latter half) and a plot device (well, half of one). It therefore turned out to actually be fairly decent — maybe not my fave of Carl Binder's eps, or even a fave in general, but better than many of his, and certainly better than I'd hoped it would be, so I can't complain.

This episode painted Sheppard as a bit harsher than I was comfortable with, but it paid off in a very poignant ending. Of course, I was deliriously happy that Todd was in it, and was quite happy with his characterisation. Writer Alan McCullough also wins points for succeeding somewhat where Gero didn't in "Brain Storm" — he made McKeller tolerable for me!

All do respect to Gero, Staite, and most especially Hewlett and my McKeller-loving readers, but I am declaring this edition of the column to be a severely "Anti-McKeller" zone. So Mallozzi's last episode, while not as shining or explosive as "Broken Ties", let him go out of the season with a fairly good bang! It feels good that I've been able to, thanks to the writers and Picardo's talent, around so thoroughly on Woolsey's character, that I enjoyed the use of him here -- thanks, guys, for proving my fears unwarranted. (Now if only you could do that with McKeller -- I really would like to enjoy her characters again).

Best Carl Binder ep ever! And one of the best of the season, as well, right up there with "The Queen" and "Broken Ties" (though not on par with "The Shrine", of course). It was a great mix of action and humour, tempered with some beautiful character moments. My McShep-lovin' heart is overflowing with joy, there was so much fantastic bonding between our boys here!

This ep, as I suspected, proved a fairly strong follow-up to the first half of the story arc; bravo, Gero! Lots of cleverness all around, from Todd's decision to use the Daedalus itself as a weapon, to John's idea to save the Daedalus, to Rodney's idea to save the galaxy! I'm proud of our guys!

While it didn't really turn out to be the Ronon/Rodney friendship ep I was hoping for, overall, I'm pleased with this ep, especially in regards to the development of Keller. She proved herself very capable, both physically and mentally, having come a long way since "Missing".

I was looking forward to this Alan McCullough-penned ep almost as much as "The Shrine", and I was not disappointed! It was interesting to see the more forceful side of Todd — he's usually so easy-going, like he's constantly bemused. And yet it didn't seem at all out of character — we've seen hints of this more aggressive, authoritative side before. Of course, I'm biased — I adore "teh Hyerdahl"! Todd is easily my fave character outside of McShep, so this ep was a great treat.

Sorry for my extreme tardiness! I spent the last week editing four gig worth of photos and vid footage from Dragon*Con, and only just finished Sunday night. I'm still exhausted from the con (which had, unofficially, expanded to five days and requires running around between four hotels — I only went to three, though). And I've been hard at work at the Save Atlantis campaign, of course!

An open letter to Brad Wright, as well as MGM and Sci Fi Channel's executives, regarding the recent cancellation of Stargate Atlantis:

What the hell are you thinking????

Mr Wright, did you not watch your own episode? "The Shrine" was phenomenal, a shining example of what I look for in a good story of any genre. And you expect us to be able to just let the series go, much less be happy to do so, after a gem like that? I'd hug you for writing one of my very favourite episodes of the series, but, in the spirit of my name, Wolfie, I have a strong urge to bite now.

Okay, I have to say, while it was a fairly watchable ep, not without it's charm, it wasn't one of writer Carl Binder's best. There's a sizable amount of fuzzy logic (of the non-mathematical variety) involved, and the science is a little hinkier than usual.

That was quite a thrill-ride — almost too thrilling. It was exhausting to watch, with the constant tension (I've never been so grateful for commercial beaks), and the hour seemed to fly by! But it was good: interesting concept; nice psychological scariness (my fave kind of scary); some great lines; and some really nice character moments, especially between Rodney and Teyla. (I do, however, confess to being a little disappointed that we didn't get to see Rod again.)

Wow.

After the bit of a let-down last week, this week's ep hit it out of the ballpark! It's certainly one of the best Mallozzi-written Atlantis eps to date! (His "The Last Man" still has the lead, though.) It's very appropriate that this was the third ep of the season and again starred Ronon, just like last season's "Reunion", for which this was a sequel of sorts. So if there is a sixth season, I'd say that Mallozzi would be wise to snag the third-ep slot again, which is traditionally a "Ronon" ep for some reason (not that I'm complaining!). Momoa outdid his own performance from last year, too — and that's saying a lot, since his performance last year had pretty well bowled me over!

Okay, this Mullie/Mallozzi-credited ep (I'm thinking Mullie did the writing) wasn't bad, but in the wake of an ep as awesome as "Search and Rescue" was, it suffers, I'm afraid. I mean, it's no "Lifeline" (last season's second ep). The plots just seemed a little bit forced and flat, and had a few glaring logic issues that drove me crazy. Also, having so much Woolsey kind of spoiled my appetite for the episode, so to speak — although I admit that, by the end, he'd grown on me a tiny bit. (Very tiny, but better than nothing.) Really, Woolsey's not even a terrible guy — believe it or not, I never really thought that — he is sympathetic, even amusing (and I cannot not deny that Picardo is an excellent actor). I just don't really like him; it's a gut thing that I haven't managed to get over.
