Stargate Universe: Malice

By Mike Brendan – Think of your favorite cookie. Not just type or flavor but also a specific brand/baker. Now imagine going two months without said cookie — no cravings mind you, just no cookie. Then someone hands you that very cookie, freshly baked. When you take that first bite, you realize what you’ve been missing. That was how I felt watching this week’s episode of SGU. What had been missing from the previous two episodes was tension. “Malice” made up for it.

Smallville: Abandoned

By Aden Penn – This is an episode that fans may have been waiting for, because really you can’t get more super meta that Terri Hatcher playing Lois Lane’s mother.

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Visitors

By Sonia Aurora – This is going to be seem like an unconnected rant, but I promise you it isn’t: I am not a fan of Twilight, the book series, and the film series even less so. I got through the first book and knew halfway I wouldn’t bother, because it was intended for the version of myself at 15 that might have, maybe enjoyed it (and in a lot of ways I’m not so sure about that). The final straw for this phenomenon was when a 30-something friend told me she realized she didn’t love her husband in the way that Bella and Edward love each other. Flabbergasted, I asked her how she expected to love her husband like a sixteen year old loves a vampire. My indifference from then on turned into mild hatred.

Smallville: Ambush

smallville-ambush

By Aden Penn – We spend the first few minutes of this episode watching Clark and Lois make doe eyes over each other in the kitchen. They are all glowy from their special night, and acting rather nauseating. It gets worse when Lois tells him she is not hungry for food, and convinces him they need to go outside on the porch swing. Ha! I knew it. Lois is a total freak between the sheets. If she had her way they would be doing it all over the Kent farm.

Stargate Universe: Trial And Error

sgu-mopey-young

By Mike Brendan – It was all just a dream. I’ve never been a big fan of that trope — always comes across as some sort of cop out, and in SF it can become a “it was all just temporal mishap/psychic warning” plot device that allows the writers to keep actual plotting for that episode to a minimum.

By Aden Penn – “It’s like dating God or Bono” might be the best line I have heard describing what it would be like to date an alien super hero. Well done!

So Long, Caprica

sasha-roiz2

The structure of Colonial society was far more interesting than the Cylon bits or the religious bits and could have led to deeply thought-provoking discussions. Caprica was a missed opportunity to do some hard-hitting science fiction addressing the multitude of problems on Earth (terrorism, which has been well represented in the show, is not the only problem we have; nor is it the biggest).

Caprica: False Labor

So, I’m sitting there, trying to watch Caprica, and all I can smell is cat pee. I think the that put a significant damper on my Caprica viewing experience. The other, non-peeing cat, had no such problems as she sat calmly on the ottoman, watching the entire show. I’ve only ever seen her do this with the Wesminster Dog Show.

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Quake

By Sonia Aurora – It’s family day at the Walmart (or some super size store equivalent) with the camera panning over the pharmacy section before resting on Steph and Daphne as Steph tries on another pair of sneakers, which she is wearing out in about 3 week increments.

Smallville: Isis

smallville-isis

By Aden Penn – Seeing the preview for “Isis” worried me a little bit, because I was worried this was going to be a cheesy and over the top episode. It had it’s eye rolling moments, but to be honest there was a lot in there that was kind of important, and really enjoyable.

Caprica: Things We Lock Away

Hey, costume people? Let’s talk for a minute. I have a question. What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to make Alessandra Toressani look awful? Are you? She’s a cute girl the size of my pinky and you are dressing her terribly. Look, skintight metallics don’t look good on anyone except for American Apparel models and even they look like 1980s public access dance video understudies.

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Vigilante

no-ordinary-vigilante1

By Sonia Aurora – Personally, I have a compassion for vigilantism. In theory, I don’t necessarily see issue with someone taking matters into their own hands when they’ve been personally attacked or wronged. In practice, however, you’re dealing with a heaviness of emotions, and there is great potential that everything will funnel from something that at its onset comes from grief –stricken honor to something dark and uncontrollable. Superheroes do practice a certain vigilantism, but I think what distinguishes them as “super” is that they don’t break from the principle of what they are trying to do, which covers a grander plane than just a personal achievement.

Smallville: Homecoming

smallville-lois-homecoming

By Aden Penn – Unless something changes I am putting “Homecoming” down as my favorite Smallville episode this season, and it starts right from the opener. We see three magazine covers, featuring Kara, Oliver and then a big red S with “Hero?” underneath it. Clark has brought his usual cloud of doubt with him to the game, but ever the optimist Lois is beaming with her hero worship. Which in this episode made me a little teary, I am really a Lois fan girl now. She tries to convince Clark that what he needs to do is hit up the Smallville High school reunion.

Caprica: Retribution

caprica-clarice-holoband

As good as Carpica is, I’m finding that I’m simply not that interested in the architects of the Colonies’ ultimate destruction. We already know that, somehow, they’ll both succeed. What I’m interested in is the Adama family and I’m disappointed that there hasn’t been more of them. Cylons and grief and religion aside, the Adamas are the heart of the series. It’s their struggles – not Cylons – that tie BSG and Caprica together. I need more Adama and I need more Adama soon.

The Event: A Matter of Life and Death

event-1-4-leila

By Keri – As The Event’s mythology grows, as the writers find their voice and the actors grow more comfortable with the roles, I find myself more willing to be critical of them. With the first couple of episodes I always cut some slack, mostly because you don’t hit kindergartners with a SAT test on their first day. You let them wander around and be cute and look for flashes of natural talent. And with this show, yes, I’ve seen some flashes, but it’s finally time to level some criticism.

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Ring

no-ordinary-ring1

By Sonia Aurora – I love that Jim is as romantic as he is, because it feeds into how he channels his glee and awe with his powers, as well as his (mild) angst in not being able to do more, not yet at least. I like that Steph remains clinical, from her cutting comment in the beginning of the episode, to logically understanding Daphne’s need to confide in someone. This is a real, honest couple, by TV’s standards, that is nice to see develop and unfold.
