by Teresa Jusino – It was slim pickins this past week at the comic shop due to the Memorial Day weekend. Comics came out on Thursday, and only two titles I read regularly came out. Did I decide to only buy those two titles and save some money for once? Of course not. I used this as an excuse to try several new things! Because I’m a comics slut, apparently, and I’ll try anything once. Also, I have my reader to think about. That’s supposed to be singular. I’m being self-deprecating.

I’m beginning to wonder if comic shops are the best places to find good comics anymore. I know there’s stuff out there; I read about it online. But, even though it’s in Diamond, it’s not making it to a shelf near me. Consider Michael Bracco’s Novo. This is the kind of comic that, had I found it at my local comic shop, I would have bought. Instead, I came across the artist and his comic at Art Star Craft Bazaar in Philly.

By Teresa Jusino – Paul Cornell has a lot on his plate. Not only did he recently confirm a two-book deal with TorUK, and is nominated for two Hugo Awards this year – for Captain Britain and MI:13: Vampire State (Best Graphic Story) and One of Our Bastards is Missing (Best Novelette) – but he’s also taking on two enormous responsibilities this month. One is to comics fans, as he takes over writing duties for DC’s Action Comics. The other is to fans of genre television, as the pilot for his horror series, Pulse, is set to air in the UK on BBC3 TOMORROW. June is a big month for him indeed!

By Teresa Jusino – You can tell that certain comics character was born in the 1980s. There’s a “Just Say No” thing about them; an After-School Special vibe that dates them and makes them a bit cringeworthy when reading them today. Dazzler is one of those characters, and I have no idea why she was chosen for a one-shot as part of the Women of Marvel series. Writer Jim McCann tries his best writing for this character…but she’s a disco-era pop singer on roller skates whose power is to turn sound waves into light fercryinoutloud! What?! I’m sorry, but what kind of dumb-a@# power is that?

By Teresa Jusino – This was a really good week in comics. This past week was one of those times where I’m actually encouraged by the presence of women in the medium, both on the creative end and as characters in the stories! This week out of 12 titles I read two had both female writers and artists, two had female writers, one had a female artist, and six had female main characters. Wow. Half the comics I read this week had heavy involvment from women. It’s easy to complain about how far we have yet to go in this, or any, industry. But look how far we’ve come! Look at what we can do!

By Sylvia Bond – My editor asked me to review the Supernatural TV tie-in book called “The Unholy Cause,” by Joe Schreiber. I agreed, even knowing that for me, books like these are a hodgepodge mix, a genre that has no home, or has too many homes.

by Teresa Jusino – I read a lot of comics. Very often I read too damn many to review every single one of them in any sort of a coherent fashion. Plus, you don’t need to read about the stuff I’m meh about. What’s the point? It’s all about strong emotions here, people! The stuff you have to read, and the stuff you shouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. So, here’s the deal: from now on you’ll get a Best of the Week, a Worst of the Week, and a Something New selection, as I usually try to buy at least one thing every week that I’ve never read before. The rest of what I’ve read that week will be listed at the bottom, and everything will be rated out of 5 Stars (* being the worst, ***** being so good it cures cancer, **** being what most really good issues will get).

Vern’s Transformers review is the sort of thing to give me hope that America hasn’t become a complete cultural toilet. That’s one that I may take out and read on occasion, when the rest of the world is agape in brainless wonder at the glorious CG, 3D stylings of another blockbuster movie, insisting that it’s not supposed to be Hamlet, and it’s just meant to be enjoyed. Then I’ll clutch my review copy of Yippee Ki-Yay, Moviegoer in one hand, a glass of wine in the other, and not feel so alone for a few minutes.

by Teresa Jusino – Sorry for being MIA for the past two Thursdays, everyone! Doctor Who week nearly killed me. But you should know that of last week’s fare, the “favorite comic” slot was tied between Vertigo’s The Unwritten #12: Willowbank Tales (Silly rabbit, books are for kids!) and Marvel’s Black Widow #1 (Um, I’m sorry, did you think you were badass? Natasha is getting her intestines operated on WHILE SHE’S AWAKE!) In addition to both telling great stories, both have amazing interior art. Black Widow takes the prize for Best Cover, however, featuring a cool, 1960s-style Black Widow.

by Teresa Jusino – This week was a really light comics week, and if I’m being completely honest, not a great one in terms of story quality. Several of my favorite titles were in stores this week, and yet most seemed to be at a boring point in their story arcs. It’s a shame, though I suppose these are the issues we have to get through to get to the good stuff, right? Right?!

by Teresa Jusino – Mini-reviews of some of this week’s comic offerings. You’re pretty much only going to hear about the things I bought, but I have a pretty varied taste (though I tend to be a Marvel and Vertigo girl), and will often pick up a random title on a whim, so there’s bound to be something in here for you. If not, tell me about what I’m missing!
Aaaand….GO!
