The last weekend of July I vended Maker Faire Detroit. It was rad, met cool people, saw neat stuff, ate amazing food. The only down side was the 19 hour drive to and fro. Michigan is far ya’ll.

We’re getting more Blade Runner at some point in the future, but how close are we to that Blade Runner future? It’s looking like we’re closer than we may think.

Somewhere, the Silver Surfer quarter shakes its silver fists in the air and shouts, “Why didn’t I think of the island nation of Niue?”

Superheroes as we know them were born from the suffering of the Great Depression. It’s only fitting that in our new Depression, we take on that mantle ourselves.

My husband was a lost cause. I knew it going in despite trying desperately to change him. I knew my energy was better spent on other causes, like coloring and playing Legos.

The US Post Office has been previewing their new 2012 stamps for the past few days. It’s the usual stuff we can expect from the post office: influential Americans, plants, things that spell out “LOVE“. Personally, I think the USPS is missing out on a great opportunity to capitalize on the swirling vortex of 2012 [...]

The petty, jealous, tween girl deep inside of me wants to hate the girls of Team Unicorn. They are pushing past the geek girl stereotypes (they’ve actually been accused of being TOO SEXY) and creating media projects that I want to have created. But they look like they are having so much fun doing it all, and when they talk about their interests, I can relate to them. These are my peeps – albeit the tall, gorgeous, famous ones who don’t actually know that I exist. Still….think if I invited them to my slumber party they’d come?

I’ve longed for subtle jewelry to represent my fandoms. I don’t mind shouting to the world that I love Star Wars, but I do like having chic pieces that I can wear all the time. Plastic, bright, and sparkly just doesn’t fit every situation. Her Universe, the sci-fi for girls fashion company founded by Ashley [...]

So, I cried a little during the Shuttle Atlantis launch. I teared up because leaving the planet is still a tremendous achievement that fills me with hope and makes me proud to be an American. Then I teared up more because this is the end of the shuttle program and it feels like we’ve given up on the quest for awesome. Looking around Twitter, I’m not alone.

Here’s the thing, Michele. No one is going to blame me for ripping out my neighbor’s liver and making fois gras with it. My neighbor is a racist anti-Semite who puts her garbage out on the wrong day, anyway. But you, Michele. People might think you’re racist because of this pledge. And that’s way worse.

Taxidermy freaks me out.
Not because of objections to hunting or anything like that. More a general objection to having dead things in my house. But, I do like the idea of stuffed things on my wall. It’s a conversation starter, like our first apartment in Philadelphia.
At Anatomically Incorrect Creatures, The Creature Specialist (aka, Bree Yena) is solving this decor problem with faux taxidermy. In her Creature Lab, she hand makes faux taxidermic hybrid creatures and plushie veggie wall trophies.
Being a fan means your favorite characters become like friends and family, we become attached and they become a part of us. Being a fan produces an automatic feeling of excitement; a rush that feels like you ate an entire pint of ice cream as fast as you could and did a hand stand right after. You feel full, happy and dizzy at the same time. You feel like Lil’ You again. Meeting Robin Williams outside of Bengal Tiger, even for a few brief moments, made Lil’ Me and I meet for the first time in a very long time.

As a kid, very briefly, I collected porcelain. That collection lasted about ten minutes because 1) the tight little flower designs were too fussy for my refined 6 year old taste and 2) I was a klutz. Angela Rossi has solved the problem of fussy little flower designs. With her company, Beat Up Creations, she turns thrown out and forgotten plates into the sort of awesome display pieces I’d love to hang on my wal

I truly love musicals, but even I have my limits. And I’m someone who loves Xanadu with a genuine sort of love, not referential hipster irony. Everything about that musical is perfect to me: Olivia Newton-John’s hair and costumes. Sonny’s terrible delivery. The ELO/ ONJ soundtrack (featuring Gene Kelly and The Tubes!). Best of all? Roller skates!
I even liked Starlight Express (shut up) because, hey, roller skates and I was 12.

I’m constantly hearing students insist that they can’t do math because it’s not fun. Math was my longtime opponent in school, but even I can see the fun in something like factorial five. I mean, the expression is written 5!
Nicole Dick at Nausicaa Distribution makes plushies, cozies, cross-stitch patterns and all sorts of other awesomeness inspired by math and statistics. It shows that there really is fun to be had in math.

I’m pale. Really pale. When I actually end up outdoors in the daylight, I wear lots of 50 SPF sunscreen. Therefore when I show my legs to the world, I like to cover them with hose, tights, leggings, or thigh highs. I recently put aside my standard almost sheer black pantyhose to search for something grander. Imagine my delight when I realized that stockings and tights with geeky designs existed!
