Sci-Fi Saved My Day

TARDIS

This week, my foe is an event: my state’s high stakes testing push. For my current school, it’s a Xanadu production number when compared to traditional schools where they have an actual building with real classrooms and a cafeteria.

Don’t Be Scared of Theme Parties

Ninjas at a Pirate Party

So, you’ve been invited to a theme party and costumes are encouraged. Or if it’s one of my parties, they’re probably required. You’re either excited or dreading it with a passion. You might be thinking up excuses about why you can’t attend. I’ve only met a few people who fall into the gray area of ambivalence about dressing up. I think that people dread theme parties for a couple of reasons: they have no idea how to start putting a costume together or they’re worried whatever costume they wear won’t be good enough. Fret not, it is easy.

What I’m Wearing to the Apocalypse

manish-arora

So, I’ve been following Paris Fashion Week, which is sort of an exercise in futility because whenever I try anything trendy or slightly beyond basic, I wind up looking like a three year old who dressed herself. Oh, I still want to wear it, but I fully accept that my fashion aesthetic won’t be acceptable until the fall of civilization.

Getting Costume References

Star Wars Dressing a Galaxy Cover

Unless you are cosplaying an original character, you’re going to need reference pictures to put together your costume. You need to check out the color(s) of the costume, the way the fabric hangs, where the hemlines are, what kind of fabric is used, which way the cuff is folded, and on and on. The more details you include, the nicer the costume and the more recognizable. And admit it; it’s nice to be recognized.

You Still Can’t Take the Sky from Me

Do Browncoats Have Hope? While some shows fade into obscurity when canceled prematurely, there is at least one show that simply will not die. Fans of Joss Whedon’s Firefly – Browncoats, we call ourselves – refuse to give up on our beloved Serenity and her crew of shiny misfits. With such dogged determination, could there be a possibility of fans launching a return flight?

Star Trek: The Exhibition of a Lifetime

We are sure there are many holy sites out there for fandom, but since we live in the Midwest, our options are limited (although we do intend to take a Supernatural road trip soon). So, when a traveling exhibit of greatness arrives somewhere in our vicinity, we feel obligated, even driven, to attend. So, on Saturday we visited the Louisville Science Center’s latest attraction which happens to be Star Trek: The Exhibition.

Watson and the Onset of SkyNet

I have been unsettled from the moment I saw the promotions of the Jeopardy! challenge of Man vs. Machine that happened this week on the game show. Now that the “event” has come and gone, I’m even more nervous.

Dressing Up Elf

I have a prediction about convention season costumes this year: elves will be in. Okay, I actually have no idea what will be popular or how many people actually pay attention to those trends. I just cosplay whatever I think will be the right combination of fun and doable.

YouTube: The One Hit Wonder Machine

Is this a bad thing? No, not at all. It means that anyone (animal or inanimate object) can become a one hit wonder even in an over-saturated market. For all the unwilling toddlers filmed being goofy or dancing on tables, it’s embarrassing date material when they get older. Thankfully by then the memory of them hopped up on laughing gas will have long faded from the YouTube wall of fame. No longer do you need the skill-set of a film student, graphic designer or techno wizard to have a successful video. A simple iPhone video can be the difference between and everyday life and a short burst of fame that might even get you a chance to be on local or national news. There’s even now a chance to make a little cabbage from monetize a successful video.

Six of the Weirdest Sex Symbols in Movie History

It’s no secret that geeks have their fetishes. How many guys do you know that would give their comic book, video game and DVD collections combined to have one magical evening with Sailor moon, 2D and all? But us girls aren’t immune to the call of unconventional objects of affection. Not only do girls have their share of out there crushes, we get even weirder with it than our cartoon lusting male counterparts. And no I’m not talking about Spock, even your mom wanted to do Spock … sorry for that image.

The Anti-Social Network

On Monday, February 7, 2011, I deactivated my Facebook account. The act made both scared and liberated to do so. It’s not that I’m anti-technology. Something unconsciously triggers in me, a need to connect to something real, and a screen isn’t it.

My Heroines Have Always Been Evil Queens and Witches

My friends idealized the princess-damsels, though, and I played along. But, the truth was that my favorite characters in the more popular stories were the villains: the evil queens and witches who were knowledgeable and daring, who didn’t suffer stolen radishes or snubs. And it only had a little bit to do with schadenfreude.

Crossplay vs. Femme Cosplay

I like to cosplay male costumes. I’ve done Han Solo and Indiana Jones. I’ve got loose plans for Boba Fett, a member of the Imperial Guard, and maybe the Tenth Doctor. Because of my predilection for dressing like a guy, I’ve recently learned about the subtle differences between crossplay and femme cosplay of a male character.

Have Our Pop Culture References Expired?

I guess in a way, the late 20th century pop culture references have expired .. but only on first mention. For those who “lived through them” it’s an instant connection in the same way a comic book geek says Sinister 6 and crystal then looks for the other comic book nerd to out himself. When that connection is made, it’s fun, cool sometimes kind of a signal that says, “Yeah I know why I need to go 88 miles per hour.”
