I don’t mind the term closet cosplay. I’ve never tried to pretend I made anything I’ve purchased. Some cosplayers see it negatively though. I emphasize the word some, but like with anything, negativity sticks out more than positivity.

Her Universe Makes Sci-Fi Jewelry Sexy

Star Wars Charm Bracelet

I’ve longed for subtle jewelry to represent my fandoms. I don’t mind shouting to the world that I love Star Wars, but I do like having chic pieces that I can wear all the time. Plastic, bright, and sparkly just doesn’t fit every situation. Her Universe, the sci-fi for girls fashion company founded by Ashley [...]

Cover Your Legs with Geek

Batman Pantyhose

I’m pale. Really pale. When I actually end up outdoors in the daylight, I wear lots of 50 SPF sunscreen. Therefore when I show my legs to the world, I like to cover them with hose, tights, leggings, or thigh highs. I recently put aside my standard almost sheer black pantyhose to search for something grander. Imagine my delight when I realized that stockings and tights with geeky designs existed!

Doctor Who Cosplay – The Companions

Amy Pond

I’ve recently fallen into the vast, ginormous, epic, etc. world of Doctor Who. I don’t know how I’ve missed out on the Doctor for so long. I was intimidated by the long history, and I thought I had to watch hundreds of hours to catch up. I ditched that idea and started with the new Who.

Interview with Geek Girl Bonnie Burton

FINALCRAFTBKcover

If geek girls had an army, Bonnie Burton should be the captain. She would lead us into battle with glue guns, snark, and extra copies of Blade Runner. We would take over the world. By day, Bonnie is the Senior Editor for StarWars.com and by night she writes, crafts, publishes books and zines, and stays busy enough to make your head spin. I was lucky enough to talk to her about her zine, writing, Star Wars dates, and her recently published book – “The Star Wars Craft Book.”

Don’t Be Scared of Theme Parties

Ninjas at a Pirate Party

So, you’ve been invited to a theme party and costumes are encouraged. Or if it’s one of my parties, they’re probably required. You’re either excited or dreading it with a passion. You might be thinking up excuses about why you can’t attend. I’ve only met a few people who fall into the gray area of ambivalence about dressing up. I think that people dread theme parties for a couple of reasons: they have no idea how to start putting a costume together or they’re worried whatever costume they wear won’t be good enough. Fret not, it is easy.

Getting Costume References

Star Wars Dressing a Galaxy Cover

Unless you are cosplaying an original character, you’re going to need reference pictures to put together your costume. You need to check out the color(s) of the costume, the way the fabric hangs, where the hemlines are, what kind of fabric is used, which way the cuff is folded, and on and on. The more details you include, the nicer the costume and the more recognizable. And admit it; it’s nice to be recognized.

Crossplay vs. Femme Cosplay

I like to cosplay male costumes. I’ve done Han Solo and Indiana Jones. I’ve got loose plans for Boba Fett, a member of the Imperial Guard, and maybe the Tenth Doctor. Because of my predilection for dressing like a guy, I’ve recently learned about the subtle differences between crossplay and femme cosplay of a male character.

Throwing a Fandom Themed Party

By Amy Ratcliffe

Last night, I was up until an ungodly hour looking at screen caps from every episode of Firefly. I was searching for just the right reference image of the helm. Why would I do such a thing? The obvious answer is because I’m throwing a Firefly themed birthday party, and also because I’m a little crazy. I know that Firefly doesn’t necessarily scream birthday. It could have been any occasion really; I just wanted an excuse to have a shindig.
