The Elderly Geek is tired of being meek and mild-mannered. It’s giving her indigestion. She has decided to enumerate ten things in life that jerk her chain, hoping folks will get their acts together and stop pissing her off.

While audiences agree that girls and young women should have positive role models to look up to, a shift must occur. As it stands, girls and women can be powerful, so long as they have “appropriate guidance.”

The Umbrella Academy’s Vanya is completely changed in both body and mind, now rejoicing in destruction and her violin is now a fearsome weapon, capable of tearing people apart with a single note, and a symphony will destroy the world.

Behind every young heroine has to be a strong male presence to guide and control her so that she doesn’t become too dangerous (in other words, independent). These women may have the power to save the world, but they also have to be protected from themselves.

Frankly- even though I have the cups from 7/11- I don’t. When Iron Man came out I was all about it. Iron Man was always one of my favorite Marvel characters. The blend between asshole and super-scientist that is Tony Stark just clicked for me. Even though it is a bit formulaic and similar to [...]

Celebrities have lives. On any given day they probably do normal things like the rest of us. Do we really need to see their vacation photos, what they wore to the airport or what they bought while shopping? Why can’t we just let them live their lives while enjoying what they do? Is that a crazy notion? Once upon a time, it was the norm.

I have been unsettled from the moment I saw the promotions of the Jeopardy! challenge of Man vs. Machine that happened this week on the game show. Now that the “event” has come and gone, I’m even more nervous.

I guess in a way, the late 20th century pop culture references have expired .. but only on first mention. For those who “lived through them” it’s an instant connection in the same way a comic book geek says Sinister 6 and crystal then looks for the other comic book nerd to out himself. When that connection is made, it’s fun, cool sometimes kind of a signal that says, “Yeah I know why I need to go 88 miles per hour.”

I’m being a total hypocrite suddenly giving half a damn about the Superman movie after months of total disinterest, yet a Brit portraying one of our most enduring American icons really doesn’t sit well with me.

I’ve been a strong advocate for Catwoman in the Christopher Nolan Batman series since The Dark Knight came out. The second the credits rolled I thought, if he can deliver such a dynamite Joker than think of what he can do with the world’s sexiest crazy cat lady. Besides, after the Halle Berry debacle that shall-not be named, this character was just as in need of redemption as any Gotham City resident that Joel Schumacher slapped nipples on for no reason.

By Thera Pitts – Fanboys, how I hate them so. I know what you’re thinking, I’m writing for a genre website, don’t I sort of fit into that category? First of all, no. Second of all, shut up. Fanboys are to geeks what fundies are to Christians: bigoted extremists who can’t be silenced. They turn conventions, message boards and comic shops everywhere into dark, insidious wastelands of douchebaggery. Here are the five behaviors that separate the normal, upstanding geeks of the world with the sweaty, basement dwelling fanboys that make us all look bad.

By Sonia Aurora – I’d heard whisperings of a Buffy reboot, in film form, which we all know was already done in film form. Badly. Seriously, Hollywood, are you so idea-starved that you can’t scavenge through Twitter or Facebook for other plotlines? Why, why, why are you trying to kill something not only I but so many others love so deeply, while also spitting in the face of its creator and mastery?

I left “Rationalizing Comics and Sequential Art in the Classroom” annoyed with First Second for putting together a panel which implied that an education in visual literacy is for affluent kids. I left enraged (again) at public education in this country and how it’s set up to ensure that one segment of the population always succeeds and another segment always stays exactly where they are.

The Attleboro Sun-Chronicle suspended all comment activity on their website in April of this year in response to “blatant disregard for appropriateness guidelines, blind accusations and unsubstantiated allegations.” So, all the usual stuff that goes on everywhere in the interwebs.

by Teresa Jusino – I say “again,” because it seems like all geeks do is argue for the legitimacy of the art forms they love. Comic books, and sci-fi and fantasy anything are mostly considered lowbrow pop culture save a few begrudging exceptions. I bring this up, because I just read an article on the Mother Jones website that tries to make the case that current box office numbers are suffering, because people over 30 are going to the movies in dwindling numbers, and that this problem is caused because Hollywood films have gotten too juvenile.
