About Teresa Jusino

TERESA JUSINO was born on the same day that Skylab fell. Coincidence? She doesn't think so. As a writer, her work has appeared in Elmont Life newspaper, and on the sadly defunct website, CentralBooking.com. She is a founding member and editor of The Revolving Door Commune Blog, is currently at work on a collection of short stories, and is writing a web series for Pareidolia Films called The Pack, which is set to debut this fall! As a geek, Teresa loves all Star Trek, Lost, Fringe, comics, and anything Joss Whedon, Brian K. Vaughan, and Neil Gaiman ever touched. She is also an aspiring fangbanger.

Beginning of Line Continues Caprica Where Syfy Left Off

by Teresa Jusino – It’s so awesome that I’m able to write about this as Sylvia is beginning her wonderful (and much-needed) series on fan fiction. In addition to being a fun and worthwhile pursuit in its own right, it has proven to be the lifeline through which its source material can continue to exist. Before Doctor Who returned to television in 2005, it existed solely as fan fiction for a good sixteen years, and many of the writers of the 2005 Who were products of fandom. People like Steven Moffat (the show’s current showrunner) and Paul Cornell (writer of some of the most popular stories in New Who) were writing fan fiction, keeping their beloved property alive any way they could! And now, Doctor Who is the most popular show on the BBC all these years later. All because fans just wouldn’t leave it alone.

May the Force Be with Katie

katie-thumb

by Teresa Jusino – This letter addressed to Katie, a 7-year-old girl from Evanston, IL whom you might have read about at her mother’s original blog post about bullying, or in subsequent news coverage about the fact that she’s been teased at school for carrying a Star Wars water bottle. Apparently, carrying Star Wars merchandise is a “boy” thing to do. Could’ve fooled me.

Sex and the Single Geek Girl: NYCC Speed Dating!

geek-girl-in-green

As promised, I’m reporting back about speed-dating at New York Comic Con! Sadly, this account isn’t going to be as first-person as I’d hoped. I didn’t pre-register, and when I went to register on-site, I was told I didn’t have to, because there were so many guys and not enough girls. Great! When I got back, though, the situation had changed drastically. The event had been given a smaller room – to “create demand” according to what Ryan, the guy running the event, was told by NYCC. So now, I (along with five other women) had to compete for one of two remaining women’s spots.

Geek Theater: Circus of Circus

Circus3

by Teresa Jusino – OK, literature and politics geeks! Raise your hand if you’ve read George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Now, imagine that instead of a farm, it was set in the company of a traveling circus. Imagine that instead of animals getting rid of humans, a group of performers got rid of their ringmaster. Imagine that instead of pigs abusing their power in the barnyard, money-hungry performers sold out their vision of a “circus without a ringmaster” for a quick payday by doing a television commercial.

The Mysterious Case of Sasha Roiz

sasha-roiz-1

From the notes of Detective Teresa A. Jusino – It would’ve been easy to just let this go as just another case of re-fried brain, but the moment I looked at his face, even with the holoband on and under a year’s worth of facial hair, I recognized him. Just like that, the case became personal, and I had to find out what was at the bottom of it. The victim’s name is Sasha Roiz. And I knew him.

Sex and the Single Geek Girl: Half a Geek Couple?

geek-couple-fanboys

By Teresa Jusino – I have a profile on OKCupid, and in it I mention that I’m a geek girl who’s into comics, sci-fi, etc. So all it’s done is send guys my way who are into those things. Those things, and nothing else. I’m someone who appreciates people’s differences. I don’t want to be half of a geek couple.

Sex and the Single Geek Girl: Cee-Lo is a Hater

Cee-Lo

By Teresa Jusino – Recently, in my Twitter travels, some dude had the nerve to say something to the effect of “I dare you to find me a geek girl who is still single.” While lots of geek girls I know are in great relationships, there are plenty of us who are still looking. Geek guys seem to think that all a geek girl has to do is walk into a con and exist in order to get attention. While it would be nice if that were true, the reality is that most geek girls get ignored unless they’re wrapped in latex and dressed like Harley Quinn, Lee-loo, or Slave Leia.

Help a Browncoat, Save the World

Scott-towel

By Teresa Jusino – The wonderful thing about geeks is their ability to channel the energy of many people and harness the power of the internet to do great things for the world. A lot of the time, they use this ability in support of their favorite geeky pastimes (Save Our Show! Save Our Comic!), but very often they use it to raise money and/or awareness for a worthy cause.

Geek Theater: St Nicholas

By Teresa Jusino – St. Nicholas is a one-man Irish vampire story. A theater critic tells the tale of his dissatisfaction with his normal life that includes a wife and children, his obsession with a young actress he gave a bad review, and how those things led to a trip from Dublin to London, where he encountered a house full of vampires.

Geek Theater: The Little One

little-one-thumb

by Teresa Jusino – For a play whose playwright and director bill as a “horror” play, The Little One wasn’t terribly frightening. Granted, I was always a little unnerved whenever one of the vampires in the play would snap a human’s neck, and Patrick Shearer’s sound design would kick in, forcing me to rub my neck in sympathy with every CRACK. However, I was never afraid. Perhaps casting it as a “horror” show is simply meant to attract lovers of that particular genre, but I never once feared for any of the characters, or for my own well-being. Lest you think this is a criticism of the piece, it isn’t. I just didn’t get that fright was really the point of this story.

In Defense of Comics. . . Again

by Teresa Jusino – I say “again,” because it seems like all geeks do is argue for the legitimacy of the art forms they love. Comic books, and sci-fi and fantasy anything are mostly considered lowbrow pop culture save a few begrudging exceptions. I bring this up, because I just read an article on the Mother Jones website that tries to make the case that current box office numbers are suffering, because people over 30 are going to the movies in dwindling numbers, and that this problem is caused because Hollywood films have gotten too juvenile.

Nosedive’s The Little One: Rewriting Vampire History

By Teresa Jusino – Two years ago, I interviewed director Pete Boisvert and playwright James Comtois about their theater company, Nosedive Productions. Today, Nosedive’s 10-year history is littered with all manner of comic book, fantasy, and horror stories. Comtois’ latest play, The Little One, opens TONIGHT, and hopes to take the vampire myth into some exciting new directions. I recently had the chance to talk with Pete, who is directing The Little One, about how far Nosedive Productions has come in ten years and how this show, which is the company’s largest endeavor to date, will propel Nosedive into the next ten years.

Comics Round-Up: Week of 6/9

unwritten-14

by Teresa Jusino – It wasn’t a stellar week, but it wasn’t bad. Also, not very many new titles caught my eye…but the one that did? LOVED it. Lastly, even though I’m not giving it its own review this week, I just have to say that I’m completely head-over-heels for Bobby Drake in Ultimate Spider-Man. If he were around when I was in high school, I would totally have wanted to make him my boyfriend. And with that, here we go…

True Blood S3: Bad Blood

Ah, Sookie. You’re the protagonist of this whole thing. Why do I have so much trouble with you? Perhaps it’s because you are so inconsistent. Of all the characters on True Blood, she is the most poorly defined, and seems to switch personalities faster than Jason switches sex partners. She loves Bill, she despises Bill, she loves him again, but not really. She’s strong, intelligent, and has a backbone of steel, or she’s a ditzy girly-girl thinking about nothing other than her romance with Bill.

Donald Glover = Band-Aid. Creating Minority Superheroes = CURE.

By Teresa Jusino – Think about it. A talented black actor can only find inspiring, fun, challenging superhero roles outside his race, and has to force the Hollywood studio system to retcon years of film history as well as years of comic history, because his options for playing an iconic superhero of his own race are THAT limited. HOW MESSED UP IS THAT?!

Comics Round-Up: Week of 6/2

by Teresa Jusino – It was slim pickins this past week at the comic shop due to the Memorial Day weekend. Comics came out on Thursday, and only two titles I read regularly came out. Did I decide to only buy those two titles and save some money for once? Of course not. I used this as an excuse to try several new things! Because I’m a comics slut, apparently, and I’ll try anything once. Also, I have my reader to think about. That’s supposed to be singular. I’m being self-deprecating.

Interview: Paul Cornell

By Teresa Jusino – Paul Cornell has a lot on his plate. Not only did he recently confirm a two-book deal with TorUK, and is nominated for two Hugo Awards this year – for Captain Britain and MI:13: Vampire State (Best Graphic Story) and One of Our Bastards is Missing (Best Novelette) – but he’s also taking on two enormous responsibilities this month. One is to comics fans, as he takes over writing duties for DC’s Action Comics. The other is to fans of genre television, as the pilot for his horror series, Pulse, is set to air in the UK on BBC3 TOMORROW. June is a big month for him indeed!

Comic Round-Up: Week of 5/26

By Teresa Jusino – You can tell that certain comics character was born in the 1980s. There’s a “Just Say No” thing about them; an After-School Special vibe that dates them and makes them a bit cringeworthy when reading them today. Dazzler is one of those characters, and I have no idea why she was chosen for a one-shot as part of the Women of Marvel series. Writer Jim McCann tries his best writing for this character…but she’s a disco-era pop singer on roller skates whose power is to turn sound waves into light fercryinoutloud! What?! I’m sorry, but what kind of dumb-a@# power is that?
