About Sabrina Boyer

As a kid my dad would sneak scary movies past my mom and let me indulge in his horror movie fetish. I grew up watching V, Alien Nation, The Thing, The Fog (all originals) and then, in 1992 when Buffy the movie came out, I became obsessed with vampires, girl power, and all things gothic. I once stayed home from school, faked sick, and watched BTVS: the movie 6 times in a row. I know the beginning cheerleading dance by heart (still). Currently, I'm obsessing over Laurell K. Hamilton novels, and dream about Anita Blake being my best friend.

Buffy for Beginners 4.19: New Moon Rising

By Sabrina Boyer – So Oz is back. But the thing is, Willow’s kinda gay now. She and Tara are even thinking about getting a cat together and naming it Ms. Kitty Fantastico or Trixy. Tara even wants her dorm room to be Willow-friendly. Tara’s even going to the Scoobie meetings. And when she’s there, Oz shows up in the extremely monosyllabic way that he does with “Hey” and things get awkward.

Buffy for Beginners 4.18: Where the Wild Things Are

By Sabrina Boyer – Just so you know this episode isn’t exactly like the children’s book. It’s a story about children who were tortured with religious rhetoric and only hoped they had a fantasy land they could escape to. Christ didn’t allow fantasy lands, or anything else. What’s worse? Riley and the initiative are living in the remnants of angsty tortured past.

Buffy for Beginners 4.17: Superstar

by Sabrina Boyer – That’s right folks. Jonathan is a SUPA-STAH! Okay. I suppose I waited so long to write this review of this episode because, and I don’t know if this is okay with you other Buffy fans, I pretty much despise this episode. It’s my LEAST favorite, hands down. Even more so than Bad Eggs from season two.

Buffy for Beginners 4.16: Who are You?

By Sabrina Boyer – I know I’ve said this about a lot of episodes, but this one is definitely in my top five. Superficially, I think it’s safe to say that we all have wondered what it would be like to be in another body, to have a different body than what you’ve been given; as a young woman, I had this fantasy a lot. I was chubby, had braces, acne, your basic nerd. If I had had the option of occupying the bodies of either Sarah Michelle Gellar or Eliza Dushku, complete with slayer strength, it’s safe to say I would’ve taken it.

Buffy for Beginners 4.15: This Year’s Girl

By Sabrina Boyer – This episode is all about Faith. Not the belief, the character, and boy is it good. We finally get to learn who Faith is as a person and her motivation for her bad choices in season three. It really is true; with just a simple twist of fate, Faith could’ve been Buffy, or, any one of us could have been her, bad choices and all.

Buffy for Beginners 4.14: Goodbye Iowa

By Sabrina Boyer – This episode picks up where “The I in Team” left off; if you recall, good ‘ole Maggie Walsh tried to kill Buffy, who, in turn, was killed by her own creation, Adam. It is not a far leap to suggest that we are to see Maggie as Dr. Frankenstein. A classic example of “just because we can doesn’t mean we should” lesson for us gentle viewers, and a heavy critique in my opinion of Western science and military secrecy.

Why Jennifer’s Body Gives Me a Wettie

By Sabrina Boyer – There was a lot of backlash after Juno came out and after Diablo Cody won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The backlash seemed to be mostly aimed at her clever and quippy beyond their years teenage lingo used by her characters and this now infamous Hamburger phone. (I’m pretty sure I had one of those as a kid, and while not very easy to use, it is retro chic).

Buffy for Beginners 4.13: The I in Team

By Sabrina Boyer – Did you know that magic at the poker table constitutes cheating? Hey, I say, if you’ve got it, flaunt it.

Buffy for Beginners 4.12: A New Man

By Sabrina Boyer – This is an episode that gets overlooked often. It’s also an episode that spotlights the magnificent acting chops of one Anthony Steward Head. Now I’m not one to go for the older guys, but for Anthony Stewart Head (ASH for short) I’d do it in a red hot minute. He’s the only actor I can think of that could make a demon costume look hot.

Buffy for Beginners 4.11: Doomed

By Sabrina Boyer – I think this episode really starts to mark the beginning of the Scooby gang drifting apart.

Buffy for Beginners 4.10: Hush

By Sabrina Boyer – If I were going to list my top five Buffy episodes, Hush would definitely be in the list. Of course, this list fluctuates depending on time of year, what’s going on in my life at the time, and a horde of other factors; however, Hush will, I can safely say, always be in that list, somewhere. A seminal episode and nominated for an Emmy (which it didn’t win but should have; it was robbed. It’s clear the Emmys don’t recognize sci-fi/fantasy shows as serious or warrants merit, but that’s another issue. The fact that it was nominated speaks highly of the sheer genius of this episode).

Buffy for Beginners 4.9: Something Blue

By Sabrina Boyer – Poor Willow. She’s still blue about Oz leaving. As a viewer, I’m blue too about Oz’s rapid exit. But after the bad show of Angel and Buffy’s relationship, we oughta know that love doesn’t end well in Sunnydale

Buffy for Beginners 4.8: Pangs

By Sabrina Boyer – I don’t usually like “theme” episodes of any series; I especially hate very special Xmas episodes where the audience is taught a very important lesson concerning the spirit of Christmas or some such crap. But here, in this episode, we learn the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Buffy for Beginners 4.7: The Initiative

By Sabrina Boyer – I love that Spike is back in rotation. I love even more how he was tased by the stealthy military guys a.k.a. the Initiative. It looks like the slayer isn’t the only force down with trying to keep the bumpies and crawlies at bay. It’s just their way of doing things that’s not quite….right. But we’ll get to more of that later. Right now, Spike is locked in a very white room. This concerns me. Err, wait. Riley first.

Buffy for Beginners 4.6: Wild at Heart

By Sabrina Boyer – When I first saw this episode, my heart went out to Willow. I have always been Team Willow in this particular episode. Don’t get me wrong; I love me some Oz. However, there is just no excusing what he’s done in this episode, and trust me, I hear you.

Buffy for Beginners 4.5: Beer Bad

By Sabrina Boyer – This isn’t my favorite episode. But it’s the episode where Buffy finally gets over Parker in all of his douchey glory. But he still makes a cameo in her dreams….

Buffy for Beginners 3.4: Fear Itself

By Sabrina Boyer – Unlike the other Halloween episodes the series does, this one does not have an annoying damsel in distress Buffy. It has awesome costumes, quippy lines, and a frat/Halloween party gone bad. What more could a girl ask for?

Buffy for Beginners 4.3: The Harsh Light of Day

By Sabrina Boyer – The thing vampires don’t get, or at least, forget, is the brightness of the sun, the brutal highlight of all the nooks and crannies to blind you. Sometimes the harsh light of day can be painful, and this is a lesson Buffy learns all too quickly as she experiences the walk of shame for the first time, and a dude turning all evil after sex for the second. Ouch.
