The Walking Dead is a libertarian fantasy in the same way that The West Wing was a liberal fantasy.
I’m a raging liberal and I want to believe that the White House is staffed by incredibly loyal, super smart, progressive patriots with a quick and easy banter. I know that’s probably not true, that it’s probably more like a gaggle of sycophants climbing over one another in a never ending struggle for power and position.
But, I like to visit the imaginary Bartlet administration and get wistful over the way I’d like things to be.
I imagine libertarians would similarly enjoy visiting Rick Grimes’ world, in which there is no government, no taxes, unlimited personal freedom, and human decency is optional.
Don’t feel compelled to slow down for a clearly desperate guy who’s begging for help? No problem! That is, as long as you do slow down to pick up his backpack after he’s dead!
Sounds like libertarian Disneyland. Ron Paul just creamed his pants.
Other Walking Dead Thoughts:
- Check it out. Show had two black characters with multiple lines and managed to NOT kill off either of them.
- Although we’ll probably never see Morgan again.
- Hmmm. Back in the early days, Rick went back for Merle, but not for Morgan.
- For the first time, Michonne was actually Michonne instead of a silent, walking sword.
- There are no good choices left to make in this world.

Your knowledge of libertarianism and Ron Paul is very clearly lacking. If you can’t say anything nice or correct, don’t so anything at all.
*say
Because if the internet is known for things, it’s being nice and/or correct.
So because there is already lots of untrue stuff on the internet, it’s OK to write more untrue stuff? That does not seem logical at all.
But perhaps, in the same way that you fantasize about the occupants of the White House being saints, you also fantasize about your ideological opponents being depraved beasts. It would make life simpler, wouldn’t it?
While I applaud your knowledge of American politics (as a Canadian), and ability to write a few paragraphs about parallelisms between the show and government shenanigans, I can’t help but feel that someone who has clear disdain for TWD probably shouldn’t be writing weekly reviews for PinkRaygun. I’d prefer to read reviews from a fellow fan. Sorry
I disagree with you because I do like the show. Liking the show and being critical of it aren’t mutually exclusive.
English Bob, is seems you missed this key point regarding my White House fantasy:
“I know that’s probably not true, that it’s probably more like a gaggle of sycophants climbing over one another in a never ending struggle for power and position.”
As far as fantasizing about my opponents being depraved beasts, that’s inaccurate. I fantasize about them being compassionate and having strong critical thinking skills.
Whether you think it’s true or not isn’t the point. The point is you want to believe it. And I am suggesting that you want to believe that people who disagree with you are depraved beasts. That way you don’t have to bother finding out what they actually believe – and it does seem you are not at all familiar with libertarian thought.
The comments in your post are roughly equivalent to “Those pro-choice people WANT TO KILL BABIES!”, or “Those peaceniks WANT TO BE INVADED BY ISLAMOFASCISTS AND LIVE UNDER SHARIA LAW!”
Inventing motives and beliefs for your opponents is so Fox News, don’t you think?
Repeating the last line of my previous response: I fantasize about opponents being compassionate and having strong critical thinking skills. Ignoring it doesn’t mean it’s not there, but I do understand that acknowledging my statement’s existence would undermine your desire to pound the keyboard with accusations.
As far as my comments about no government, no taxes, unlimited personal freedom, those are real things that real, live libertarians have said to my face. This happened during the course of finding out what they actually believe.
It really sucks when our assumptions turn out to be total bullshit.
