The Vampire Diaries: The Departed

Holy crap! I’d applaud but I’m still in awe over the awesomeness that was the majority of this episode. Now that’s a way to end a season.

There were issues with things. I mean, common sense shouldn’t be a surprise. More characters should use it. All the time and not just when the plot calls for it.

You’d be sad too if your face was covered in blood and there was a rotting corpse in your arms.

For example – Alaric could have killed Damon a handful of time. Like staked him in the heart and killed him forever and not the “hey, I’ll break his neck so he can come back later and be a pain in my ass.” I’ll be nice and chalk that up to the non-evil Alaric’s friendship with Damon. I’m feeling generous today.

Also – Elena was coherent and mobile when Stefan pulled Matt out of the car. Why couldn’t she have saved herself? Better yet, why couldn’t he save them both? What the point of vampire strength if you don’t yank two people out of a car at once?

Even Damon is confused as to how this meeting makes any sense.

And then – The retcon of Damon’s first meeting with Elena. I get what you are trying to do with this but come on. Did we all forget what an ass Damon was when he arrived in Mystic Falls? Killing Vicky? Abusing Caroline? Killing relatives? I can’t see him being all chivalrous and noble to a girl who is identical to the bitch that created him and broke his heart, no matter what his feelings for Katherine might have been. Then he compels her to forget him all because she said she might have loved him had she met him first. Doesn’t ring true, so I don’t buy it. It was also pretty damn contrived. If she gets that memory back I’m going to have to call shenanigans.

But I’ll let all of that slide. Why am I so generous today? Because for the things this episode did wrong, they did so many so right in a spectacular fashion.

Klaus is the sire of our entire Scooby gang, so they can’t kill him. Only Alaric finds Klaus in his mummy form and stakes him with the original killing dagger. Flash and flames and the douche is dead…or is he?

None of our heroes seem to be feeling the effects of their sire’s staking; aside from Tyler because he’s a big fat faker. Seems Bonnie and her spells are at it again. To save EVERYONE she helped Klaus out of his body and into our resident hybrid’s. At least Tyler/Klaus will have more to do next year.

The problem with Alaric is solved rather easily. I really thought he’d be the big bad for next year. I’m also sad to see him go because this time it’s for keeps. Sure, he was always and sometimes the only part of the weekly body count, but I liked him. Now he’s dead. Damon seemed very upset by this. As did Jeremy. Although, their sadness might be due to the fact that they both know that Alaric could only die with Elena’s death.  I do, however, like that no one (aside from Elena) seems to be safe on this show.

It’s the gasp that all the dead make after returning to life.

That’s right. Elena is dead!I’ve been calling for her death all year. Hooray! But wait! What’s this? Remember last week when she keeled over. Well Jeremy took her to the hospital and Dr. Fell, who didn’t report the seriousness of Elena’s to anyone, gave our little doppelganger vampire blood.

Next season will be all about Vampire!Elena, the vampires who love her, and Tyler/Klaus. If that’s they route they go with this show, someone please shoot me in the face right now. Maybe Bonnie will get tired of the whole thing and just set the entire town ablaze.

Okay, I’ll admit I did let out a little gasp when Elena sat up. Maybe she’ll be the big bad next year. No, I don’t believe it either, but Nina Dobrev does do evil really well. Did I mention I miss Katherine? Do I see an identical vampire smack down in the future? I sincerely hope so.
