Lost Girl: Not The Worst Thing Ever

Which is surprising considering it’s on Syfy and features a succubus.

I mutter a lot.

It’s all part of my continuing efforts to not smash everything down inside. Irritating things occur, leading certain thoughts to cross my mind. It’s not appropriate to yell such things to the perpetrator, but it’s not healthy to push it all down and top it off with a Manson-eyed smile, either.

So, I mutter.

Succubus. For god’s sake,” I muttered (yes, I mutter in italics) while reading about the premise of Lost Girl, even though there was no one around who could possibly be hurt by it or take action against me. “This is just gonna be an hour of sexy face masquerading as female empowerment. I’m officially declaring the strong female character to be dead.

Gorram Syfy,” I added, as usual.

“Syfy didn’t make it,” John pointed out. He was sitting next to me on the sofa and heard every word. “It’s a Canadian show that they’re broadcasting here. There’s two seasons already.”

I still went in to the first episode, “It’s a Fae, Fae, Fae World”, expecting the worst.

Happily, I did not get the worst. Didn’t get the best either, but Lost Girl has a hell of a lot more to offer than expected.

Bo is the succubus in question, only she doesn’t know what she is. All she knows is that, sometimes, she sexytimes a person to death. For all the death in her drifter wake, Bo is surprisingly well adjusted. I love that she doesn’t beat herself up about it. She’s like a shark.

Also, Bo is a ninja. I’m pretty sure ninja skills are required of all strong female characters now. Viewers only want strong female characters with great skills (ninja skills, knife skills, makeup skills….).

After getting sloppy with a kill (a rapist) and picking up a human sidekick (the rapist’s intended victim), Bo gets the attention of the local fae community, who make her fight and choose a side: light fae or dark fae. (Dark Fae comes with a dental plan; that’s where I’d go).

I really enjoyed not hating “It’s a Fae, Fae, Fae World”. The acting has its CW moments, but the writing isn’t bad, the succubus point didn’t dominate, and the female characters seem like they might actually be strong.

Fine, I’ll admit it. In spite of myself, I kinda loved Lost Girl. Definitely in for the next few episodes.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

  1. The show only gets better from here. The cast has some great chemistry together and the family dynamic really kicks into gear as the first season unfolds. Lots of fun to come.
