Saving NBC’s Chuck

All last season, Raygun Robyn helpfully offered NBC suggestions on improving Chuck, the formerly fun little spy show that now threatens to crush your TV with the weight of its geeky stunt casting.

Surprisingly, NBC did not take Robyn’s selflessly offered tips. So, when Pink Raygun had the opportunity to do a conference call with Chuck‘s co-creator/executive producer, Chris Fedak, Robyn got to take her ideas directly to the source.

This is what happened.

Raygun Robyn: Hey Chris, how’s it going?

Chris Fedak: Hey Robyn.

Raygun Robyn: One of my favorites on the show is definitely Jeffster, and I was wondering are we going to see any more  from Lester or Jeff in maybe like a spin-off or a Web series, or maybe even like mini-comic book?

Chris Fedak: I love all those ideas. I would say…

Raygun Robyn: You can have them for free.

Chris Fedak: I love them all. I love them all. I love watching Vic and Scott together. They’re an incredible duo. And I – and in regard to the band, you know, their story is going to change in a very big way in the next couple of episodes. And like everything else I kind of described in regard to the changing dynamic of the show, everything will change inside the Buy More, especially in regards to Jeff and Lester.

And so the – there’s a lot of really kind of interesting things that are happening there. It’s one of the things I’m really excited to see what you guys think of when we actually see – when those changes start to happen.

So in regard to the band, we will not see them for quite some time because of those changes, so yes. So but it’s – I don’t want to give away too much, but there’s a lot of really crazy things happening there.

Raygun Robyn: Okay. Okay. You’re worrying me a little, but I’ll just wait and see.

Chris Fedak: Oh, you should be worried because – by Episode 5, we’re going to see Lester in prison.

Raygun Robyn: Oh, no. Well, that’s not such a surprise I guess considering what those two do.

Chris Fedak: There you go. An actual spoiler. I said something.

Raygun Robyn: And I’ve also been brainstorming on a couple show plots and wanted to run a couple by you. Just for your enjoyment.

Chris Fedak: Okay, fantastic.

Raygun Robyn: First we have “Chuck vs. the Joint Checking Account”. Chuck and Sarah decide to combine finances revealing that Sarah has spent a disturbing amount of money on collectible toy clowns.

Chris Fedak: That’s weird. Sarah’s into the toy clown game?

Raygun Robyn: Oh, yes. Definitely. She definitely has, you know, daddy issues, and so she’s trying to fill the hole.

Chris Fedak: No, that’s too creepy. But, we did want to do an episode at one point where we wanted Chuck to be concerned about how much money Sarah spent on shoes and clothes, but I don’t know if we actually ever did that episode.

Raygun Robyn: Okay, and then I’ve got “Chuck vs. Lupus”. Chuck decides to self-diagnose a cold using WebMD and the Intersect. The answer comes back Lupus. And I was thinking maybe there could be like a House crossover, but I think that’s on a different network, so probably not.

Chris Fedak: It is a different network and a different studio, so it would be super complicated to do, but I love where your head is.

Raygun Robyn: I’m shooting for the moon. Shooting for the moon. And then the last one, which I think is definitely the winner is “Chuck vs. Glengarry Glenn Ross”. Castle has a new manager, Jack Casey, played by Alec Baldwin. The team has 24 hours to identify and shut down an IRA terrorist cell or their jobs are on the line. The only problem, Jack Casey is sitting on the leads – the Glengarry leads.

Chris Fedak: Got it. Got it. I like that one too. That one actually I think has some legs. We might need to consider that one if NBC orders more episodes.

Raygun Robyn: I think – yes, you could do like you know, the fast pace talking back and forth. I think you know you might be on to something there.

Chris Fedak: Fantastic.

Raygun Robyn: Well thank you so much Chris.

Chris Fedak: Thank you.

Production on the 13 episodes of Chuck‘s final season are underway, so Robyn’s ideas may not come to fruition. However, Chuck has shown a stout-hearted tenacity.  Even though season 5 is billed as the final season, there’s always the chance that NBC will bring it back. After all, it’s not like Grimm is gonna last.

This may be the best conference call exchange I’ve seen. I love that you were able to totally engage the interview subject while seemingly taking the piss.

I can’t wait to see you do more. Absolutely brilliant!

Robyn, I think I want you to do all of our conference calls. You turn them from fanboy fawning into epic episodes of awesome.
