Yes! For the first time since I started watching Doctor Who, I’ve gotten my husband to watch with me. Which episode did he start with? The stupid Pirate one. He was all, “And you like this show why?” My response was along the line of, “Well, not THIS episode.”
Then I immediately wanted to break out my box set of Tenant episodes and show him the brilliance that is Who. I have my fingers crossed that it will get back to form soon. PLEASE! Get back to the good Doctor sooner than later.
I didn’t even make it through that entire pirate episode, I was so frustrated and annoyed.
Something similar happens with me and John every time I put in Babylon 5 DVD. He says, “How did this get such a following? How did this last five seasons?” To which I respond, “Shut up and let me enjoy it, OK? GAWD!”
Exactly my husband also started with the pirate one and really I found it much boring
but the rest of it is awesome I think.

I… don’t think I’m watching the same show you are. With the exception of ‘Curse of the Black Spot’ — which is, yes, regrettable and full of plot holes — I’ve really been enjoying this season of Who.
Okay, sure, the foreshadowing on Ganger!Doctor was a bit heavy-handed, but I was completely shocked when the episode ended. Not because there was a Ganger!Doctor, but because that’s where the episode ended. I hadn’t been watching the clock and had no idea it was a two-parter. (A two-parter that we have to wait two weeks to see the conclusion of, no less.)
I’ve found that I’m generally pretty willing to give the shows I love more leeway than some viewers, and that especially holds true for Doctor Who. I grew up watching the classic series with its plywood sets, dude-in-a-rubber-suit monsters, and overacting, so the modern incarnation is vastly better in comparison. And if you want to blame someone for the season-long story arcs, you have to blame Russell T. Davies, who started doing them in the 2005 series with Bad Wolf, then Torchwood, Saxon, and the DoctorDonna.
I kind of like that we’re not being reminded about River and the TimeGirl every single week. (Or are we? Does Schrodinger’s pregnancy have something to do with either or both of them? Knowing Moffat, probably.) It would feel unrealistic to me if Team Tardis randomly brought up River Song while they’re running from Gangers or climbing through a junkyard.
The thing is, I like the season long arcs. And there is a way to address these things without it being completely out of left field – Moffat and Co. managed it pretty well last season.
I guess I got spoiled by having a good stretch of time without disappointments.
We’ve only had five episodes so far this season. It’s way, way too early to be declaring it a good or a bad season. I thought the two part opener was brilliant and The Doctor’s Wife was excellent as well. So we’ve had two not so hot episodes. Big deal.
I find it amazing how many people judge a TV series based on a couple of episodes. Have we as a society become so used to instant gratification that we can’t give a show a few episodes before we make a judgement about it. Great shows like The X-Files and Buffy took quite a while to find their feet. They wouldn’t stand a chance in today’s TV landscape.
Step away from the coffee and Mountain Dew. Give TV series some time.
Moutain Dew is disgusting.
The entire series isn’t being called into judgment – just this season so far. Not to mention, we’re five episodes into a seven episode mini-season.
I happen to be a fan of Mountain Dew but to each his/her own.
My point was that I don’t think it’s fair to judge a season so quickly. I think three of the five episodes we’ve had so far have been very, very good so judging a season as bad based on only two bad episodes doesn’t make sense to me.
I think my favorite part of the Who universe is that it’s always fun (even in it’s seriousness). Maybe the pirate episode wasn’t the best, but I have to say it was a blast to watch Amy wield a sword and the siren doctor was a very cool concept. I enjoyed the first part of the ganger two parter and found the very beginning scene heartbreaking when they just let the ganger die in the acid, we dispose of many things in our world very similarly, without thought of recourse. I am enjoying the ride and just very thankful that an intelligent, fun and imaginative show is thriving, even it’s mediocre episodes are far superior to most of the dull products on tv today.
