I thought that one of the most wonderful things about the internet was the geek community’s ability to create our own media, a news feed that wasn’t reliant on old school rags like the New York Times for reporting on the pop-culture stuff that interested us.
So, why do we give a $h!t about what Ginia Bellafante thinks?*
Not that I haven’t read her commentary on Game of Thrones. I have. And I didn’t care. She’s not part of my community and she hated Torchwood, so her opinions on things I’m interested in don’t matter. Not to me.
So, why do we care about what she thinks?
Moreover, why do we constantly need the Mundanes to validate our choices in entertainment?
*Of course, that’s not to say that you’re not entitled to express your feelings or opinion. Express away. I’m interested in examining the source of the rage.
Lisa Fary is a graduate of the creative writing program at Florida State University and holds an advanced degree in Special Education. Her earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She’s angry that it’s 2010 and she still doesn’t have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

Well, in terms of the "business" part of show business, she matters because a lot of people read the Times and are influenced by its reviews. So she has likely turned off a number of potential viewers who had previously been on the fence about giving GOT a chance. Her opinion doesn't matter to those of us who were planning to watch ever since it was announced; it matters to the undecided audience that might have watched without her influence. And that impacts the ratings, which influence whether the network makes another season.
Geek culture has been denigrated for a very long time, but with the rise of shows like Lost among mainstream pop culture, it's increasingly frustrating to see genre shows dismissed before they've even aired. And women genre fans are still largely ignored as a legitimate fanbase. Basically, we're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it anymore.
I'm more upset at her complete inability to do her job, which is to discuss the show with a critical mindset. Whether she likes it or not doesn't matter, but her job as a critic is to … well … critique and not pontificate on how poo-poo genre fiction is.
After watching this show the other night, I'm completely flabbergasted by her assertion that the sex was thrown in to lure the ladies. The only sexual situations that happened were incestuous and creepy – not exactly a sexy kind of sexy time.
