Sci-Fi Saved My Day

TARDIS

This week, my foe is an event: my state’s high stakes testing push. For my current school, it’s a Xanadu production number when compared to traditional schools where they have an actual building with real classrooms and a cafeteria.

Toxic TV: Infecting Our Television Landscape

snooki-book

The viewing public has somehow turned into voyeurs of dysfunction. At least in the days of gladiators, the people fighting each other had some modicum of skill as barbaric as it was. This notion of watching real people being terrible to each other, it doesn’t make sense that this would be entertainment but there it is. Is there a cure for Toxic TV. At this point no. Apparently the more vile and revolting the better. All you have to do is look at the journey one recent celebrity has taken down the rabbit hole of madness to see this proven. Not only is he getting more attention than he had before, but he’s turned his dysfunction into some sort of twisted entertainment.

V: Devil in a Blue Dress

V-Season-2-Episode-9-Devil-in-a-Blue-Dress

Most penultimate episodes preparing for the season finale serve as a chance to build up momentum and tie all of the individual plot lines together. Devil in a Blue Dress succeeded in that regard, but that didn’t make the episode any less muddled or confusing.

Being Human: Children Shouldn’t Play with Undead Things

being-human-8

by Jenn Kim

Hm. So it seems I’ve done a 180 about Aidan. Yes, I’m still unduly prejudiced towards the combination of butt chin and overly pursed lips on a man, but take that same man and have him play cards with a 10 year old boy, and suddenly I’m all, “Helloooooo, Nurse!”

Don’t Be Scared of Theme Parties

Ninjas at a Pirate Party

So, you’ve been invited to a theme party and costumes are encouraged. Or if it’s one of my parties, they’re probably required. You’re either excited or dreading it with a passion. You might be thinking up excuses about why you can’t attend. I’ve only met a few people who fall into the gray area of ambivalence about dressing up. I think that people dread theme parties for a couple of reasons: they have no idea how to start putting a costume together or they’re worried whatever costume they wear won’t be good enough. Fret not, it is easy.

What I’m Wearing to the Apocalypse

manish-arora

So, I’ve been following Paris Fashion Week, which is sort of an exercise in futility because whenever I try anything trendy or slightly beyond basic, I wind up looking like a three year old who dressed herself. Oh, I still want to wear it, but I fully accept that my fashion aesthetic won’t be acceptable until the fall of civilization.

Stargate Universe — Resurgence, Part 2

sgu_resurgence_17

One problem with these mid-season breaks is that I risk forgetting details like character names, and as a result I have to re-familiarize myself when the show continues. While I do have notes to consult, they have inconsistencies, such as using “MathGeek” for Eli. However I do remember the previous episode and its “cliffhanger” ending. I expected the Destiny’s rescue to come at the hands of a Deus Ex Machina, since I had already seen them abuse that with Telford’s arrival with the seed ship.
What actually happened ended up making sense instead.

Supernatural: And Then There Were None

Locked out

I’m sure Show meant to demonstrate the contrast between good and evil, however, I’m thinking it might set the anti-misogynists off to think that Evil is represented yet AGAIN by a woman named Eve, and Good is represented by a trucker named Rick.

The Event: And Then There Were More

THE-EVENT-And-Then-There-Were-More

Admittedly, I’ve been kinda adrift since Heroes and Lost ended – I just don’t feel complete as a person unless I’m being antagonized by some show. It’s not as easy as it sounds. The perpetrator/show can’t simply be bad, lest I lose interest and stop watching (case in point: The Cape). It’s got to transcend plain badness and still have something that keeps me interested and coming back.

So, in an attempt to get back that old feeling, I’m giving The Event a shot at being my TV adversary.

V: Uneasy Lies the Head

V-Season-2-Episode-8-Uneasy-Lies-the-Head

I can’t talk about this episode without mentioning Hobbes and Erica’s angsty hookup. And why would I? It was the most compelling part of the episode. It was so compelling that V’s usual bout of illogic and absurdity didn’t concern me.

NBC, are your recent efforts so terrible cuz you can’t find good writers? Trust me, they are out there, dying to write good and smart fiction that people want to watch. Is it cuz you feel the need to dumb everything down to make it more accessible to the masses?
