A few weeks ago I decided that maybe I was wrong about the caliber of some of the actors and that maybe the fault was due completely to the randomness of the writing staff. Luckily, the place where I originally wrote the reviews managed to disappear, so I get to watch these episodes again somewhat [...]

Celebrities have lives. On any given day they probably do normal things like the rest of us. Do we really need to see their vacation photos, what they wore to the airport or what they bought while shopping? Why can’t we just let them live their lives while enjoying what they do? Is that a crazy notion? Once upon a time, it was the norm.

Transhuman and posthuman concepts in SF fascinate me — sometimes they terrify me, but that’s another topic all together. What this episode does is touch on those subjects in way that’s not intrusive with either philosophical or technical talk.

Buying soap is like buying a piece of multi-purpose art. Just don’t think about the fact that you will later destroy that art by washing your back with it.

This little novella is how I like my science fiction stories. Less shiny spaceships, and more dystopian grit.

Sucker Punch is a movie for any one who who’s ever felt powerless and abused and trapped and too beaten down to act. It’s uncomfortable and heartbreaking and amazing.

I loved this movie, but I think what you get out of it has a lot to do with what you bring in to the theater yourself. Apparently, my DVR got the news that No Ordinary Family is on the chopping block and decided to not record the last few episodes. Perhaps, like the show’s 2 leads, it had jumped ship to try something else (though it didn’t seem to tape anything in its place).

This MPAA call on Sucker Punch is basically saying a girl being taken advantage of is acceptable viewing; a girl making her own choices and engaging in consensual activity is not.

I stopped believing in fairy tales when I realized they made real people with fallible natures look bad. Those characters that questioned authority or their station in life were punished, while those that did everything as they were told and never made mistakes managed to prosper.

On Tuesday, the first episode of Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen aired on the Syfy Channel. The oddity of a food show on Syfy is not lost on me, but I think it works. Molecular gastronomy isn’t terribly new, but it isn’t quite mainstream either. So when it was announces that Top Chef’s Marcel Vigneron would be [...]

When I sit on the subway, there’s not the majority of any race. This is a town where it’s not about segregation. Yet our entertainment is so often, ‘Here’s the white show; here’s the black show.’ With us that’s not how we take in our lives, so why are we presenting [that] on stage? So for Vampire Cowboys, [it’s] very much like, “this is who we are and we want to make sure that it’s inclusive to everyone; that everyone feels like they have a hero.”

The second I saw this shoe, I imagined Sarah in Labyrinth, slaughtering those head-tossing orange monkey puppets, skinning them, and cobbling this shoe to wear to the goblin ball with Jareth.

Given the isolated setting of the Destiny, it’s easy to overlook the fact there’s things going on Earth-side. The Lucian Alliance is an outstanding threat to Earth, and an attack is pending. With only one member of the Alliance on the ship, it’s a plot thread that can fall by the wayside. In this week’s episode it picks back up.
