V: Serpent’s Tooth

Anna FINALLY ate a rat! Well, technically she chewed it up and fed it to Ryan’s baby. The scene acted as a perfect homage to the iconic rat-eating scene in the original V, by passing the torch to the new series. The torch, of course, being the chewed-up rat carcass. Yum.

This is What a Terrible Comic Book Show Looks Like

For those of you who like it, feel free to revel in this sub-par comic book potpourri. For anyone who enjoys quality comic book films, stay away from this like the black goo that turned Eddie Brock into Venom. In the second episode of The Cape, Farraday says about his dedication, “My family is not my weakness, they’re my strength.” My strength is my remote when I turn this off.

Throwing a Fandom Themed Party

By Amy Ratcliffe

Last night, I was up until an ungodly hour looking at screen caps from every episode of Firefly. I was searching for just the right reference image of the helm. Why would I do such a thing? The obvious answer is because I’m throwing a Firefly themed birthday party, and also because I’m a little crazy. I know that Firefly doesn’t necessarily scream birthday. It could have been any occasion really; I just wanted an excuse to have a shindig.

The Cape: Tarot

With the second part of the two hour premiere, we find Vince making the classic mistake of taking it to the arch-villain Flemming in his own apartment right away. Of course, while Vince manages to hack Flemming’s unprotected computer he fails to disarm the alarm on the door. I thought he had Oracle — uh, I mean Orwell for that sort of detail?

The Cape: Pilot

By Mike Brendan

Of the many superheroes in comic book mythology, Batman always stood out as one of my favorites. He was a hero that always had to rely on his own skills. Sure, Bruce Wayne had millions at his disposal, but that doesn’t mean squat if you have to go up against the likes of Ra’s al Guhl, Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, or even Darkseid. In the end it comes down to skill, intelligence and tactics. That’s what I had in mind when I first saw teasers for The Cape.

Human Target: A Problem Like Maria/Communication Breakdown

By Rosalind

Human Target is a study in opposites, or it’s yoga, because it pulls in two directions all the time. The overall storylines about the characters move very slowly, while the action of each episode is fast and heart-pounding. They work for the greater good (the greater good), but to accomplish that goal they need to consistently break the rules and laws. The characters want to hate each other, but in reality, each one of them is needed to create a good working team. I think it’s the dichotomies that keep me interested in the show, and this episode played right to those almost perfectly.

The Fan Whisperer – Part 2

Becoming a Fan Fiction Writer: Dealing in Emo
by Sylvia Bond

There are fans who don’t write. No really, there are. Some fans make vids, some do art, some run communities, some create and maintain archives. Some only lurk, but all have their valid place in fandom. However, since I’m a writer, my focus is on writing, and so I wanted to know how fans took the next step and went from being a fan to writing in fandom.

Superheroes in Our Midst

I can’t deny being torn about this movement. I must admit to drawing my personal geek-line way before costumes generally. I respect people who cosplay and admire the work that often goes into it but it crosses into a world that’s a little too far for me. This of course is beyond that. The people involved in RLSH are taking their inspiration from the heroes I love, not just to emulate them at conventions or fan events but in real life as well. To try to apply some of their mankind helping virtues to the world we live in. I’m honestly not sure if this is inspiring or scary.

NBC, Please Stop Trying So Hard

With a fragmented TV landscape, DVRs and Netflix to deal with, it’s a tough call for any network these days as to what they should really invest in. As proven with last year’s Superbowl and shows like Idol and DWTS, the live events are the ones that are really garnering the massive views while the regular dramas and comedies vie for the capricious whims of the viewing public who have too much to choose from on any given night. Not every network can have a watershed show like Glee but at least they can try to do some more creative programming that what NBC is currently doing.

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Friends

By Sonia Aurora – Initially, I breathed a sigh of relief; Daphne retains her powers! The family literally bands together to have Daphne touch them collectively so she can absorb their memories, including many related to her. Unfortunately, as is the case with a Disney-esque superhero show, they are eschewing the reasons why she lost her memory to begin with.

Books: Trio of Sorcery

By Elizabeth Redling – When I first received Trio of Sorcery by Mercedes Lackey, I was extremely excited. Being a long time Lackey fan and having previously read her Diana Tregarde series, this set of novellas a rare treat. It’s comprised of three stories with the first being a Tregarde novella, Arcanum 101. The second, Drums, follows another set of old characters from Sacred Ground. The third is a techno/ magic variation, a genre that Lackey seems to be beginning to explore.

Beginning of Line Continues Caprica Where Syfy Left Off

by Teresa Jusino – It’s so awesome that I’m able to write about this as Sylvia is beginning her wonderful (and much-needed) series on fan fiction. In addition to being a fun and worthwhile pursuit in its own right, it has proven to be the lifeline through which its source material can continue to exist. Before Doctor Who returned to television in 2005, it existed solely as fan fiction for a good sixteen years, and many of the writers of the 2005 Who were products of fandom. People like Steven Moffat (the show’s current showrunner) and Paul Cornell (writer of some of the most popular stories in New Who) were writing fan fiction, keeping their beloved property alive any way they could! And now, Doctor Who is the most popular show on the BBC all these years later. All because fans just wouldn’t leave it alone.

Books: The Patriot Witch by C.C. Finlay

By Mike Brendan – I have to admit some bias as I review this novel. I’ve always loved late 18th century American history and the American Revolution in particular, so I looked forward to reading The Patriot Witch once it rose to the top of my To Read pile. My only regret is that I didn’t move it to the top sooner. The curse of literacy strikes yet again.

The Fan Whisperer – Part 1

I write fan fiction, which are stories about characters and situations created by someone else. I’ve been writing it since 1993, and enjoy it completely, even though I’ve never made any money doing it. For me, it is more than a hobby, it is a way of life. But when I try to explain that I spend the majority of my free time writing stories that are not only based on TV characters that a handful of people will ever read, but also that I will never get paid for, and that I can never publicly acknowledge having produced? People get a little worked up as if it was somehow their purview to determine how I should spend my free time. As if they in turn would allow themselves to be similarly counseled. And that pisses me off.
