“Kids, don’t forget to get the Yoda Christmas Tree Topper out of the attic when you get the ornaments.” That is a statement you can actually hear in geeky homes across the world nowadays. When I was a kid, it was either an angel or a silver star. I’m not sure how many other options were even available. The holiday traditions in my house were pretty standard. We didn’t have themed trees or geekery. Not that I’m complaining about the mishmash of handmade ornaments and garlands we did have. They were our own. But I love that the youngest of Padawans can have an entire Star Wars themed Christmas tree if they so desire.
If Star Wars isn’t your thing, other options abound. You can go for pop culture, computer themes, gaming, sci-fi spaceships, and on and on. The internet is full of almost any kind of theme you can imagination. If you can’t buy it, there’s probably a tutorial on Craftster that will teach you how to make it. Here are some of my favorite geek themed holiday decorations.

Yoda Christmas Tree Topper - What? Did you think I was making that up? It exists, and I am happy it does. This Jedi Master stands 12” tall and of course the lightsaber lights up. He will add venerability to your tree, and more importantly, he will keep it safe from mischievous cats.

Jayne Hat Ornament – I know you didn’t think that Jayne’s hat could get any more cunning. I certainly didn’t. But making it a mere 2” tall really adds something. It also makes it flipping adorable. Now if only someone would make an ornament size version of Kaylee’s Shindig ruffle dress.

Motherboard Ornaments - These ornaments are not only geektastic and shiny, they’re also good for the environment. They are made from recycled motherboards. Alternatively, you can disassemble that old computer I know you have stashed (because everyone has an old computer in their closet) and make the pieces into ornaments. Really. You’re not going to use it for anything else.

Game Cartridge and Controller Ornaments – This Etsy store has a plethora of ornaments to make any console gamer happy. Each piece is made from polymer clay, and you can even customize the Nintendo game cartridge pictured above.

R2-D2 Christmas Tree Lights - Because, well, why not? I am sad to say they do not come with any sound effects.
This year I am planning to combine Nightmare Before Christmas and Star Wars and maybe dinosaurs on my Christmas tree. Yes, it will be awesome.
Amy Ratcliffe still has no idea what she wants to be when she grows up. But until then, she will keep playing D&D, reading comics, and perfecting the ultimate chic lightsaber. Strong female characters in the world of geek (movies, comics, & books) influence her attitude and costumes. Visit her blog Geek with Curves.

Heheh, your going to have a really fun tree, I can see that for certain. Now you just need a millenum falcon wreath for the door.
I need those R2D2 lights!
A few years ago, we turned this Wonder Woman zippy toy into a tree topper – it was the kind of thing you tacked to the ceiling by a wire and, when it was on, she flew in a circle. It was set up so she was endlessly flying around the tree top.
