A Look Back At The Worst Part II — Movies 2010

Legion_poster

I could go on because there were a lot of bad films this year. More than 100 in fact. That means more bargain DVDs for the Wal-Mart bin next year and people at the RedBox kiosk thinking, “I wonder if that’s any good?” Epic Fail. If you did happen to catch a good movie like Inception or Black Swan, cherish those and have a happy new year.

Being Human: “So, A Ghost, A Vampire And A Werewolf Get An Apartment Together…”

being-human

By JR Pepper – For some reason the idea of a vampire wandering around an IKEA just makes me giggle. We expect something glamorous from these legendary beings, like they gallivant on these globe trotting wild adventures everyday. Going to an IKEA, working a $h!tty job, making coffee- all sound so mundane- so normal not something a vampire or a werewolf would be doing.

Hiatus Movie Catch-Up: Knowing + A Rant

knowing-dvd-560x758

OK, Knowing wasn’t originally on my list of hiatus catch-up movies, but it was free On Demand and I had recently fallen in love with Nick Cage all over again after watching Valley Girl. Nick Cage + science + free = not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Or, it should. Instead, I just got really angry by the end. Nearly BSG finale levels of anger – not because I had anything invested in this one movie, but because I’m sick to death science fiction giving way to mysticism.

The Shepherd’s Tale: Finally, The Book on Book!

FireflyRonGlass

By Jenn Kim – The third installation of the Dark Horse Serenity series is penned by Zack Whedon, aka the Best Rapper to Ever Perform in Commentary: the Musical, aka My Future Husband, but perhaps better known for being the Youngest of the Whedon Brothers, co-writer of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and writer of Fringe. Future Husband, along with Future Brother-in-Law Joss, provide Browncoats with the opportunity to receive the answer to the too-long burning question of: What up with Shepherd Book?

Books: The Scar

mieville_scar

I want to be a pirate librarian in the worst way. It would then be acceptable for me to wear stripy tights, carry a parrot on my shoulder, and holler, “AAARRRGGGHHH! No grog near the card catalog, ye lily-livered scallywag!” And I’d get to work in a library.

The Perilous Road Between Heaven and Hell

The-Official-Companion-for-

By Sylvia Bond – Books like this, with their collection of fannish things about Show, still surprise me. It seems excessive and easy, too easy. If you can remember, back before there was an internet, we mailed letters from the post office, looked up books in the library using a card catalog, and always answered the phone because you never knew who it was and it could be important.

Comics Interview: Oliver Mertz and Mike Isenberg

front-cover-trim-example-662x1024

One of my biggest frustrations as a writer is that I can’t draw. There are stories in my head that just can’t come out the way I want because, when that pencil goes to task, it just comes out a mess.

Naturally, I’m very interested to know how Oliver Mertz and Mike Isenberg, creators and writers on the indie comic First Law of Mad Science went about getting their ideas drawn and produced. Here, Oliver and Mike talk about finding an artist, getting First Law of Mad Science into production, and karaoke.

A Look Back At the Worst Part 1: TV 2010

outsourced_nbc

By Shawn Deena – It’s that time of year when we get all the countdown lists — best of this, best of that, yadda yadda yadda. I think we often don’t give enough time to the worst, lamest and most awful at this time of year. The lucky ones, well they didn’t have to sit through any of it and it became something they heard about on the internet, saw a post on a social media page or a late-night show made jokes about it. What am I talking about? The worst movies and TV shows of 2010. For part one, we’ll have a gander at the small screen. One would assume that the worst of the worst would have come and gone by now but luckily, the magical offices of craptacular programming served up a few TV gems near the end of the year. So let’s start the with the three newest additions to the suckfest for 2010.

Books: The Good Fairies Of New York

good-fairies

By Jeff Nieves – Having known absolutely nothing of its author, Martin Millar, when I picked up The Good Fairies of New York, I was unsure of what to expect. But it had a snappy title and a glowing introduction from Neil Gaiman, so I figured “why not.” What I discovered was a gem of a book that was unique from start to finish and a fun ride throughout.

Hiatus Movie Catch-Up: Sleep Dealer

sleep-dealer

During the hiatus of. . well. . everything, I’ve been catching up on the movies that I’ve been meaning to watch but haven’t because anything longer than 90 minutes is just too much of a commitment most of the time. Not that I don’t want to watch some of the well-done movies that run 2.5 hours in length, I just don’t want to spend that much time in front of my television. My first outing, clocking in at exactly 90 minutes, was 2008’s Sleep Dealer.

Tom Wheeler Talks About The Cape

the-cape-30-11-10-kc-New-Teaser-Trailer-for-NBCs-The-Cape-300x167

By Thera Pitts – Like the humble citizens of a fictional metropolis (for example, Metropolis) fanboys and girls the world over are surrounded by superheroes, in books, in the movies and more frequently than eve, on the small screen. With Smallville coming to a close, No Ordinary Family doing well in the ratings and countless other hero dramas rumored to be in the works at various networks, standing out is key. Creator Tom Wheeler, hopes to do just that with his upcoming NBC series, The Cape

Thank You Netflix for Ruining Regular TV

dead-like-me

The thing is I would rather wait until the entire season of something is over and then watch it on Netflix, or flip around the new arrivals in the instant play library and see what series escaped me that I could now watch at my own leisure. I no longer desire to watch things as they air. Netflix basically ruined my TV watching experience. Nothing beats that joy, that ease, of simply deciding to watch “the next episode” If you haven’t done it, it’s like watching TV using a Pez dispenser. If you haven’t — you have no idea what you’re missing.

Thank you Netflix.

Sanctuary: Hollow Men

SANCTUARY-Hollow-Men-7

By DR Hanson – I see SyFy’s “Lend an Actor” program is still in full swing. Their main capture at this juncture is Rona, played by Polly Walker of “Caprica fame”. I guess in this instance it’s no longer a lend program as a “Please Hire me, my show got cancelled” program.

Infinity Blade (for iOS mobile)

infinity-blade

By Mike Brendan

Let’s get one thing clear: just because you have the technology to do something in the entertainment industry, you are not obligated to use it. This started with CGI effects in films (The Star Wars prequels and the latest iteration of I Am Legend being examples) and has moved into the realm of 3D (like Clash of the Titans, Saw 3D, and anyone making games using the same sort of visuals).

Infinity Blade, by Epic Games and ChAIR Entertainment, can be added to this list.

Human Target: Dead Head

Just after evading the cops by crawling into the elevator, from the ceiling!

By Rosalind – I think Human Target is really starting to find its groove. This was a fun, well put together episode with just the right amount of everyone. Well, I would have enjoyed more Guerrero, but I always want more of my man G! Generally, if they keep up like this, I’m going to have a happy Human Target new year.
