Synapse: A Free Character-Driven RPG

nicholas-kay-synapse

RPG-creator Greg Christopher argues that RPGs for consoles are limited because you are still restricted by someone else’s world, thereby limiting your choices. Your characters as well as the world around them can only evolve and change according to the settings prescribed by the person who designed that game. Greg saw this limitation and created Synapse, which allows players “to take all the ideas that you have about how you wish your console games would actually work, and actually play them.”

My First Time: A Couple’s Con

NYCC-green-arrow

DR Hanson – Will they like me, these geeks and gamers? Will I fit in with my Flash T-Shirt I bought at Urban Outfitters or will I be eyed curiously as a poser who bought his Flash T-Shirt at Urban Outfitters? I rest upon the knowledge that I’m well versed in much of comic lore, following the X-Men since I was 8, and if all else fails, I know my strapping partner will defend my right to be there as a veteran Con goer himself. I almost hope for an altercation involving a pencil so I could watch Jamison masterfully deflect the number two weapon with the reflexes of Matt Murdock.

Supernatural: The Third Man

Samhair-moment

By Sylvia Bond – And thusly the storyline picks up a little bit. This week, someone or something is killing the folks in a little town in Pennsylvania. Turns out, a small child, on behalf of his grieving father, hopes to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of three crooked cops. In order to do this most expediently, he has traded his soul for a bit of what Dean describes as “Charlton Heston’s disco stick,” otherwise known as the Staff of Moses.

Fringe: The Plateau

computer-astrid

By Rhea Dee – So in the alt-verse, pens don’t exist. Does this mean everyone has some sort of iPad device for daily use? If so, that’s a plus for the alt-verse: in that reality, I can actually afford to own an iPad.

We’re Not Crooks, Not Even Close

loose-talk-propaganda

By Sylvia Bond – Apparently, Congress is working on approving a bill that would allow the government, at the behest of media companies, to shut down websites that it doesn’t approve of. Strictly speaking, the bill, if approved, would be focused on shutting down the internet sites of people who counterfeit or pirate copyrighted material. If media companies are allowed to do what they please, and to censor those who displease them, and I can imagine that they’d be quite, quite displeased with fan fiction and fandom as a whole, what will happen to free speech in fandom?

NYCC Panel: Comics in the (Affluent) Classroom

waiting-for-superman

I left “Rationalizing Comics and Sequential Art in the Classroom” annoyed with First Second for putting together a panel which implied that an education in visual literacy is for affluent kids. I left enraged (again) at public education in this country and how it’s set up to ensure that one segment of the population always succeeds and another segment always stays exactly where they are.

Smallville: Supergirl

smallville-supergirl

By Aden Penn – Remember that dark cloud from before with the glowy eyes? Well he’s back, and he has a target. I am pretty happy about that target, because I was hoping they would give this Godfrey jerk a face and not just make him a voice on the radio. I am really enjoying how they are throwing in things like catch phrases (truth, justice and the American way), and how they mentioned Superman last week. It’s these clever little touches that make it an enjoyable show.

The Vampire Diaries: Kill or Be Killed

vamp-diaries-caroline

By Dawn Del Sontro – Let me admit this right up front, I hate the vampire angst and the love between teenagers and hundreds year old supernatural beings. It bothers me. It’s overdone. It’s just gross and weird. All that said – this episode was 18 kinds of awesome. Awesome with a capital A.

Sexy and Subversive Halloween Costumes

sexy-ood

I think the sexy Halloween costume phenomenon has entered a Sexy Event Horizon wherein “sexy” is spaghettifying into “satire”. (That’s probably not how event horizon and spaghettification work, but this topic makes me want to use smart words).

No Ordinary Family: No Ordinary Marriage

no-ordinary-family2

By Sonia Aurora – This week’s episode starts to bring some more nuance to what this show will bring us, a better rounding out of the characters, what the family’s shortcomings might be in understanding and harnessing their powers. There were a few surprises along the way, which gave me the impression there is more than meets the sitcom dressing to this show.

The Event: Protect Them From The Truth

event-sopia-3

By Keri – lake suggests torture; Martinez, following along with the tradition that he is a cooler, sexier version of Obama, says no with a ripple of his iron jaw. Oh, the political commentary. This makes me realize that The Event is a Show Relevant to My Interests. Mostly because I voted for Obama and I’m slightly disappointed that he is not more like President Martinez.

Chuck vs The Cubic Z

chuck-sarah-2-3

By Raygun Robyn – The Buy More gets a fair amount of screen time this week as Morgan tries so hard to be Mr. Manager to his ragtag crew of Psoriasis monkeys. Morgan finds out they aren’t getting enough copies of “Spy Attack” to appease the angry mob of nerdlings and enlists JEFFSTER to stall with a Poetry Slam. An Awesome Poetry Slam. That is the first time those 3 words have been in the same sentence.

The Mysterious Case of Sasha Roiz

sasha-roiz-1

From the notes of Detective Teresa A. Jusino – It would’ve been easy to just let this go as just another case of re-fried brain, but the moment I looked at his face, even with the holoband on and under a year’s worth of facial hair, I recognized him. Just like that, the case became personal, and I had to find out what was at the bottom of it. The victim’s name is Sasha Roiz. And I knew him.

Supernatural: Two and a Half Men

Dean-wants-out

By Sylvia Bond – When our intrepid heroes last left off, they were stalking some djinn. This week, they’re hunting ShapeShifters, there’s a really cute baby involved, and Sam and Dean barely talk. I mean, they talk but they’re not really saying anything to each other. But I liked this episode better than last week, because it gave me tons to think about, and, frankly, rant about. One night I even called my sister, expounding loudly over the phone to her after one too many cups of coffee, “What is Sam’s DEAL?”
