The Sci Fi Craptacular- What Terrible Looks Like

By Shawn Deena – Let’s be clear – I’m never going to refer to this channel with their new name. It’s stupid. Before the name change there was once a time that the Sci-Fi channel had some really good programming. Then little by little things started to go south until suddenly we get a rash of Sci-Fi original movies all based around some hybrid monster, D-list actors and animation and computer graphics that makes South Park look like Avatar.

What am I Going to Do Now?

With the exception of True Blood and The Fabulous Beekman Boys on Planet Green, there’s not much that interests me on television this summer. That means this geek girl has a lot of time on her hands. What the hell am I going to do?

Sex and the City 2: Desperately Dated Chick Fest or Genre Crossing Stunner?

Recent reviews have called Sex and the City 2 dated, but I beg to differ. SATC2 has switched genres – it’s now firmly in the realm of fantasy, right up there with Lord of the Rings and The Neverending Story.

Steampunk Costumes – More than Gears

by Amy Ratcliffe Steampunk. It’s a word that’s been around for a while. Even when the word wasn’t there, the definition and style of it was. The movement has been gaining popularity though (notice how I didn’t say steaming ahead.) and more people are asking everyday – what is steampunk? Related Stuff:

Breaking In: Interview with TV Writer Jacqueline McKinley

by Juliana Weiss-Roessler A little bit of hope can be a very bad thing. This past year has been filled with false starts for my husband and I. We got a script to two agents and a manager through a professional writer. We received a recommendation letter for our pilot to turn it in for a [...]

Fringe: Over There, Part Two

By Rhea Dee – I was thinking back to the Season One Finale of Fringe and how the WTF/OMG-ness of that ending compared to this one. For me personally, Fringe’s Second Season takes the cake in terms of a more WTF/OMG ending because I am just so, so frustrated by this ending. How dare you do this to me JJ!

Comics Round-Up: Week of 5/19

By Teresa Jusino – This was a really good week in comics. This past week was one of those times where I’m actually encouraged by the presence of women in the medium, both on the creative end and as characters in the stories! This week out of 12 titles I read two had both female writers and artists, two had female writers, one had a female artist, and six had female main characters. Wow. Half the comics I read this week had heavy involvment from women. It’s easy to complain about how far we have yet to go in this, or any, industry. But look how far we’ve come! Look at what we can do!

Supernatural: The Unholy Cause

By Sylvia Bond – My editor asked me to review the Supernatural TV tie-in book called “The Unholy Cause,” by Joe Schreiber. I agreed, even knowing that for me, books like these are a hodgepodge mix, a genre that has no home, or has too many homes.

What A Completely Stupid Ending – WTF Lost?

By Shawn Deena – I don’t get it. You spend 6 years building up that amazing well-woven mystery wrapped in a puzzle covered in an enigma blanket and then you end with the heavenly light bit. C’mon! That’s just cheap.

What Will ABC Do Now?

By Shawn Deena – How do you follow Lost? Seriously how do you replace the watershed show that spurned more conspiracy theories than Area 51? Will V (holding back ridiculous laughter) take its place? Or how about the umpteenth copycat show ABC has tried to drop on us (Flash Forward, Happy Town, Insert Name of Show that copies Lost here). Is ABC saying goodbye to their Sopranos?

Lost: The End

A few days ago, I read that one of the show’s creators had said that Lost is about the survivors of Oceanic 815, not the island (now, of course, I can’t remember where and can’t find it). The finale was definitely in service to that statement – there was closure with the characters, but there are still many questions about the island, the light cave, the nature of Desmond, and more.

Lost: Let’s Give Credit Where Credit is Due

71 survivors, 122 episodes, and who knows how many theories, and it all comes down to a battle between Jack and Locke (serving as representatives for good and evil). I’m obviously looking forward to the Lost finale more than the hardcore fans are. Looking forward to closure and the sense of freedom and relief that only comes when an addictive show goes off the air.

Cue the Outrage

One their website, the PTC argues that clean, non-offensive, toddler friendly nightly network content is a right because the public owns the airwaves. The airwaves may belong to the public, but the public doesn’t have a right to quality programming. If we did, Lost wouldn’t have a magic golden cave, Sylar would have stayed dead, and Pushing Daisies would still be on the air, along with Journeyman (damn you, NBC).

ABC 2010 Upfronts

More of the same from ABC in this season’s upfronts. There’s one new program that looks promising, then the rest of the new slate is made up of medical dramas, police procedurals, legal dramas, family dramas, and relationship comedies. Like NBC, ABC is offering viewers familiar set ups that don’t seem to be doing anything new.

Is the Whedonverse Just a Figment of Tommy Westphall’s Imagination?

by Juliana Weiss-Roessler After watching the episode “Normal Again,” I chose to entirely disregard the fact that it implied that the entire series might be taking place in Buffy’s head. NBC Upfronts: 2010 Season

Now that Jay Leno, the monster that ate primetime in 2009/2010, has gorged himself and lumbered back to his lair, NBC has a lot of air time to fill. This is what they’ve got for the next season. Overall, it’s a very safe lineup with familiar stars, familiar creators, and familiar set ups.

Law & Order, We’ll Miss You

By Shawn Deena – Big announcements came out this week about the cancellation of one of NBC’s longest running shows; one has to wonder what prompted them to make the change. For fans of the show that has become an icon of the procedural crime, the big question to ask is why kill one of your most well known and consistently strong dramas. Why, NBC?
