Safe for Work: Letting That Geek Flag Fly

By JR Pepper – If you had of asked lil’ geeky me at age 17 if I would be working in an office ten years later, I would have likely said something sarcastic and gone about my day. Thing is, ten years after high school and that’s exactly what I’m doing. I try my best to make sure my clothing is ‘work safe’. I drink caffeine like a fiend. Hell, they even have me sporting a crackberry. But, it seems like only yesterday that I was wandering around college with my Sailor Moon pencil case and Trigun notebook.

Comics Round-Up: Week of 4/28

By Teresa Jusino – We have a more varied selection this week, dear readers. Thank the Comics Goddesses! This was a hefty week for me, so let’s get crackin’! The Guild #2, Madame Xanadu #22, Green Hornet #3 and more.

It’s OK to Say Good Bye to the 10th Doctor

By Nancy Mathews- The Doctor is too big for one man to inhabit. It’s like Rose taking in the Time Force at the end of season 1: no human can channel that energy for too long. The joy of regeneration is a new chance to fall in love, a new chance to discover the adventures of the Time Lord for people who have yet to ride the Tardis.

Fringe: The Man from the Other Side

By Rhea Dee – Well, it’s happened. Peter knows that he’s not from this universe. And with four episodes left, Fringe has left themselves enough time to set Peter on a path: a return to our beloved Team Fringe or a chance to join the alt-universe Dark Side. Or they could draw this out into next season, a horrifying possibility.

Star Wars Clothing for Her

by Amy Ratcliffe I admit it. I’ve ransacked the boys section of most department stores to find my handful of Star Wars t-shirts. The extra large shirts work, even if I have to layer them over a tank top. The truth is that the lack of Star Wars fashion made for girls is glaring. The [...]

Buffy for Beginners 4.19: New Moon Rising

By Sabrina Boyer – So Oz is back. But the thing is, Willow’s kinda gay now. She and Tara are even thinking about getting a cat together and naming it Ms. Kitty Fantastico or Trixy. Tara even wants her dorm room to be Willow-friendly. Tara’s even going to the Scoobie meetings. And when she’s there, Oz shows up in the extremely monosyllabic way that he does with “Hey” and things get awkward.

Lost: Season 6 – Preparing for Disappointment

By Shawn Deena – For the last six or so years we as a collective fan base have followed a plotline that is so absurd it makes the story arc of The Matrix seem logical. We went from castaways on a spooky island, to a bunch of baddies, to another bunch of baddies and some new castaways, to a smoke monster, to baddies on a boat, to time travel, to temporal plot lines where one person is in the past and another isn’t, to now season six, where all of this will come together in the next four episodes.

Supernatural: Hammer of the Gods

By Sylvia Bond – The dive motel for this week’s ep was called The Elysian Fields Hotel, and is neither a motel nor a dive, but is instead a hotel refurbished by the gods for their one and only meeting about what to do about the apocalypse. Sam and Dean stumble upon the hotel after driving in the Impala in the rain, and soon discover that their one night off is not to be. If they would only stay in a Motel 6 once in a while, they might be able to get a good night’s sleep, because not only is the chain so low end that it will never be used by ancient deities to have a convocation, but they’ll also leave the light on for you.

Comics Round-Up: Week of 4/21

by Teresa Jusino – Sorry for being MIA for the past two Thursdays, everyone! Doctor Who week nearly killed me. But you should know that of last week’s fare, the “favorite comic” slot was tied between Vertigo’s The Unwritten #12: Willowbank Tales (Silly rabbit, books are for kids!) and Marvel’s Black Widow #1 (Um, I’m sorry, did you think you were badass? Natasha is getting her intestines operated on WHILE SHE’S AWAKE!) In addition to both telling great stories, both have amazing interior art. Black Widow takes the prize for Best Cover, however, featuring a cool, 1960s-style Black Widow.

Stargate Universe: Human

I could never get into Stargate: SG-1, so when Michael Shanks showed up on screen in “Human”, I went, “Check it out! It’s Hawkman!” instead of recognizing him as Daniel Jackson. The character is still James Spader in my mind.

Why The Avatar DVD Sucks

By Shawn Deena – Will Avatar be the same movie on a 42-inch screen without the 3-D? That answer will be no. The entire crux of this film rested on the 3-D technology. That’s it. No one cared that Cameron lifted character types and plot lines from his own movies and other films. Why? Because it was really cool.

Geek Gear

by Amy Ratcliffe Back in high school (not so long ago, definitely not over a decade ago), it wasn’t easy to find fellow geeks. Besides the fact that I am from a small town, classmates didn’t usually wave their geek flags out in the open. They kept it tucked away in the dusty hall closet. [...]

Why Hit-Girl is a Role Model: A Review of Kick-Ass

By Teresa Jusino – It’s so interesting that, rather than take an R rated film as an opportunity, a vehicle through which they can approach the more difficult subjects with their children, parents use an R rating as a Keep Out sign. Because it’s far easier to not go to a movie at all than it is to sit next to a child squeamishly in a film where people might have sex, or might kill each other, and actually, you know, TALK to them about it.

Lost: The Last Recruit

This was the first time in years that I’ve watched Lost at its regular broadcast time, complete with commercials. Usually, I let the DVR record for fifteen or twenty minutes, then start, catching up to the show by 9:52 PM or so. I don’t quite remember why we chose to watch it on live TV tonight, but damn that was a lot of commercials.

Supernatural: Point of No Return

By Slyvia Bond – Well, that was a pretty good episode, if I do say so myself. Not that I had anything to do with the making of it, of course, as my contribution has been in watching Show, keeping the faith, keeping my fingers crossed. Waiting for the moment that Dean and/or Sam would say yes to their respective meatsuit duties. But even though that did happen (sort of), and even though I was able to recite dialog along with the characters from time to time (mostly Zach for some odd reason), it didn’t turn out the way I would have thought. And that’s okay, because I would rather Show take an unexpected turn than to bore me to tears and make me wish I had watched something else.

Fringe: White Tulip

By Rhea Dee – It’s not that I have a problem with God, or characters talking about God (even scientists). But when you bust out the “I didn’t believe in God but now I do cause oh my, I caused PROBLEMS, and wow, this GUILT, and now I believe in God because he is punishing me” you’re going to annoy me quite a bit. You can feel guilt without busting out the Jesus, show. It is possible.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand Deserves Your Love

I like period drama and I like action, so it stands to reason that I’d enjoy things like 300 or Gladiator. They’re the best of everything: action sequences, period costumes, and incredibly hot dudes being all sweaty and manly.
