Girl Comics is a new Marvel anthology featuring women creators. The stories in issue #1 gave us the following situations:
- Nightcrawler fighting to cabaret music
- Venus works at a ladymag
- Punisher gets ready to punish someone
- Doc Ock goes to the grocery store
- The Richards children have an imaginary adventure
- Cyclops is insecure about Jean Grey’s feelings toward Wolverine
I like the artwork from cover to cover (particularly Stephanie Buscema’s airy, retro cartoon looking work on the Venus story ), but otherwise, Girl Comics #1 is pretty lousy. The stories weren’t particularly compelling or even all that interesting.
“Clockwork Nightmare” (the Richards children adventure) was cute and very well drawn, but ultimately forgettable. The Venus story was downright ridiculous, with me muttering, “Really?”, “For god’s sake. . .” and “Is this what Marvel thinks I want?” numerous times during its eight pages. The rest – with the exception of one – fell flat, felt incomplete, and weren’t engaging.
The only story I did outright enjoy was “Shop Doc” by Lucy Knisley. It was a funny, off-beat take on Doctor Octopus with an indie art look.
Girl Comics #1 presents a dilemma. On the one hand, I want to support women working in comics by buying their products. On the other, I don’t want to support the product if it’s mediocre. Really, I expect the same quality from women creators that I expect from anyone else. That’s what equality is all about.
Right?
