Not Sewing Costumes

by Amy Ratcliffe When the subject of costumes and cosplay comes up in conversation, these fateful words soon follow: “I can’t sew.” It’s okay. It’s not the end of your costuming world. Repeat after me, you can make it work. I admire seamsters and gush over their creations. Sewing costumes produces results unmatchable with a [...]

Lost: The Package

As the end draws nigh, more and more I get the sense that Lost is going to wind up being a biblical drama, with Jacob and the Man in Black as the primaries. Now, I have a theory on that. The Man in Black? God. Bear with me and check it out.

Supernatural: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid

By Sylvia Bond – It is a dark and stormy night. Lightning flickers over a deserted graveyard, when suddenly, two hands push out of the earth, followed by the head of a man whose skin is textured by decomposition. He pushes himself up and out, because he’s got things to do and places to be. And thus is introduced the long-awaited, post-hiatus zombie episode!

Comics Round-Up: Week of 3/24

by Teresa Jusino – Mini-reviews of some of this week’s comic offerings. You’re pretty much only going to hear about the things I bought, but I have a pretty varied taste (though I tend to be a Marvel and Vertigo girl), and will often pick up a random title on a whim, so there’s bound to be something in here for you. If not, tell me about what I’m missing!

Aaaand….GO!

Construction of a Costume: Kaylee from Firefly

by Amy Ratcliffe I like costumes. I like to play dress up. I am constantly inspired by the strong characters that good science fiction and fantasy produce. This interest feeds another obsession of mine. Planning. I enjoy researching a costume, finding just the right reference photo, and making the accompanying lists only slightly more than [...]

Why I Hope Dr. Horrible Stays on the Internet

by Juliana Weiss-Roessler I know the idea of seeing our favorite musical supervillain and his hammer-headed nemesis on the big screen has many people squeeing with delight, but it has me cringing. When I first heard the rumors that Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog might have a film sequel instead of a web one, I instantly [...]

Books: Captain Freedom

Upon finishing Captain Freedom: A Superhero’s Quest for Truth, Justice, and the Celebrity He So Richly Deserves, I felt the intense need to read something difficult and meaty, something to challenge my brain after reading 272 pages of first person, self-absorbed, superheroic fame whore. But, my shelf is full of comics, craft books, and mass market fantasy/ sci-fi novels, so my elitist harumphing would have to take place at a later date.

Kick-Ass: Creating the Comic, Making the Movie

For something I’ve never read/ seen, Kick-Ass and I have had an odd relationship so far. The trailers had gotten me interested in the movie some time ago; just not interested enough to read the comic. Most of it was because I didn’t want to love the comic and be disappointed in the movie; it’s better to have a good movie experience, then feel the disappointment retroactively. The ticket price doesn’t seem like a wasted expense, then.

Number Six Bracelet How-To

by Amy Ratcliffe When I made the list of things necessary to my Number Six red dress costume, the bracelet was at the top.  It is part of the outfit, as is the silver ring.  I spent more than a couple of hours scouring the internet looking for a replica or a source. Related Stuff:
