Just over a week to go until the new series from Syfy, Caprica, bursts onto our screens. Continuing our Caprica Countdown, which is packed full of must-have* information about the series. On Release Day, Jan 22th, you can read my report from the Caprica set as you wait anxiously for 9 PM Eastern Time.
Six writers, writing
I never did see Jane Espenson on the set of Caprica. I thought I had but she disabused me of this notion via twitter. If I had seen her I would have asked her all about the writer’s room for Caprica – the lofty discussions about character arcs, motivations, show not tell – and who went for the cookies. Because as much as I love to watch the shows on TV I am secretly fantasising about how the writers came up with the ideas, the characters, the dialogue, the to-and-fro of writerly discourse…
So who are the writers of Caprica and how many are there really? I didn’t have any clue so I asked the one person who should know:
So if Ms Espenson, who was the show runner but has now opted to concentrate more on her writing for the series, isn’t sure about how many writers there are then I don’t feel bad that I’m not either. But what I do know is that she has been involved in all of my favourite shows in the last few years: Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica. Only six more days…
* The “must-have” nature of this information is not guaranteed.
WorldofHiglet is the online persona of writer Mary R. Higgins, a born-again geek reclaiming her heritage bit by bit. A youth filled with sci-fi, horror and adventure fare (TV, films, computer games and books) was crushed by years of office grind. Buffy brought her back into the fold after years of denial. Discovering Firefly sealed the deal. Now she geeks fulltime on her blog ‘the last geek bus home’ and her first novel ‘Turning left at Albuquerque” is currently looking for a home in publishing-land.

From what I know about the TV writing process, the "depends on how you count them" probably refers to a two-person writing team. Jane may be a goofball, but she's not so easily frazzled that she'd lose the ability to count in single digits.
Given the shows she's worked on, I have to trust that Caprica is in good hands with Ms. Espenson.
Given everything we've seen and heard so far, and following the lady in question on twitter with her teasing insights into the progress and process, I'm sure the writing will not disappoint.
