50 Fictional Femmes of 2009: Part Two
Yesterday, we looked at the ladies of 2009 from number 50 through 26. Today, we take it to the finish with number 25 through 1.
|
|
25. Captain Adelaide Brooke (Doctor Who: Waters of Mars): She was in command of Bowie Base One, the first human colony on Mars. Also, being none too happy with the Doctor’s interference and arrogant attitude, she takes action to undo his changes to the timeline. |
|
|
24. Ellen and Jo Harvelle (Supernatural): There are so few good women on Supernatural that it was upsetting to see their fate in the last episode of 2009. However, it wasn’t a refrigerator death and it was an incredibly noble way to go out. |
|
23. Silk Spectre II (Watchmen): She’s a fighter and hero in her own right; however, she was pushed into it by her mother. At the time we see her in Watchmen, the government keeps her around only to keep Dr. Manhattan happy, a fact that burns her to the core. Her character in the movie was a vast improvement over that of the book – in the movie, she was believable as a fearsome hero, capable of real carnage. |

22. Echo and her very special brain (Dollhouse): Her weekly engagements held the entire series hostage until the bitter end. Now in it’s death throes, Echo has turned around in a big way. |
|
21. Ellen Tigh – Over the course of the series, she too had to canoodle with both Colonel Tigh and Brother Cavil. All this time, we thought she was just a cheating drunk, but she was really the scientific brain behind resurrection. |
![]() |
20. Agent Johnson (Torchwood: Children of Earth): Ruthless in her mission, Agent Johnson destroyed the Hub by planting a bomb in Captain Jack’s stomach, subsequently containing him in concrete when he regenerates. But, Agent Johnson is not a mindless government drone; she’ll go off orders if it means saving the world. |
![]() |
19. Nina Sharp (Fringe): The woman wields power. Head of Massive Dynamic, assisting the Fringe team in saving the world, but still committed to the ethically questionable aims of her company. And she has a cybernetic arm. |
|
18. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch (Venture Bros.): She is the absolute best thing The Monarch has going for him. She builds his toys. She talks him down when he’s being a moron. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch could dominate the world if she struck out on her own and put her mind to it. |
![]() |
17. Bellatrix Lestrange (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince): Crazed, obsessed, sadistic. There are no limits to the destruction she’ll cause or the pain she’ll inflict in her aspirations as a Death Eater. |
![]() |
16. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince): She had little to do in this year’s HP movie other than be a romantic foil for Ron. Hermione has big things coming, though. |
![]() |
15. Ruby (Supernatural): Or as Sylvia Bond calls her, That Skank Ruby. You expect a demon to be duplicitous, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to learn that Ruby was in league with Lillith the entire time with the single goal of manipulating Sam into releasing Lucifer. Yet, Ruby was so good at playing the fallen flower with a heart of fool’s gold that her betrayal was genuinely shocking. |
![]() |
14. Angela Petrelli (Heroes): Mama Petrelli can make anyone believe anything, and that’s without using a metahuman ability. That’s just how she rolls. It’s a mystery how her sons came out to be such morons. |
![]() |
13. Claire Bennet (Heroes): No one seems to know what to do with Claire. The creepy, rape-y stylings her character endured in seasons one through three appear to subsided in favor of homoerotic situations with Gretchen and Tracy. In the past, messing with Claire Bear meant unleashing the righteous $h!tstorm that is Noah Bennet; however, Claire is becoming more able to fight her own fights. |
![]() |
12. Kate Austen (Lost): Teresa Jusino determined that Kate’s involvement in Lost came down to four phrases: “I’m pretty,” “What should we do, Jack?” “Shut up, Sawyer!”, and “I’m coming along whether you want me to or not!” In season five, Kate has finally weaned herself off of the Jack/ Sawyer Kool-Aid, giving up Aaron and returning to Craphole Island for reasons of her own, not because Jack convinced her. |
![]() |
11. Alternate Reality Nyota Uhura (Star Trek): Argued her way onto the Enterprise, and was almost instantly promoted due to her mastery of xenolinguistics. In fact, her mastery of an obscure dialect is what gave the Enterprise the upper hand, allowing them to hang back long enough to avoid destruction at the hands of Nero. |
![]() |
10. Adelle DeWitt (Dollhouse): Almost unfailingly composed, Adelle has carefully built the persona that hides her loneliness and drinking problem. She will do anything to keep her house in order. Formerly morally grey, Adelle has finally taken a side against Rossum, putting together a team to take the monster down. |
![]() |
9. Juliet (Lost): She’s tough, reasonable, logical – all the stuff you’d usually expect from a dude on just about any other show. Juliet is like Dana Scully, but with a Costco sized can of whupass. |
![]() |
8. Chloe Sullivan (Smallville): Girl can’t hold on to a superpower. Healing? Gone. Super brain? Gone. But, she still has super IT skills and is now filling a sort of Oracle role for the fledgling Justice League. |
![]() |
7. Kara Thrace (Battlestar Galactica): Starbuck redeemed herself in the last episodes of BSG. No more rolling around on the floor screaming, she becomes all resolve to get to Earth. |
|
6. Laura Roslin (BSG): Confronted with a nuked Earth, Roslin had a breakdown and loss of faith, giving up on her cancer treatments and washing her hands of her presidential duties. However, she came out of it in full badass mode, reminding me of the Laura Roslin I grew to love in season one. |
![]() |
5. Dr. Helen Magnus (Sanctuary): She’d be impressive even if she weren’t over 150 years old and immortal. One of the first female doctors and scientists in Victorian England, founder and head of the Sanctuary, all around awesome. |
![]() |
4. Sarah Connor (Sarah Connor Chronicles): The Terminator series has always been focused on John Connor’s destiny. It was about time that his mom got the spotlight. |
|
3. Agent Sarah Walker (Chuck): An excellent CIA agent, Sarah Walker strikes a perfect balance between compassion and ruthlessness, emotionality and tough resolve. She proved that, while personal feelings did not rule her, there was a place for them in her duties as Chuck’s handler. |
|
2. Gwen Cooper (Torchwood): Teeth + Fists + Fire extinguisher = 3 guys down. All that in the wake of an explosion (caused by a bomb in her close friend’s stomach). Elude the authorities, get Rhys, ride in a potato truck, re-establish Torchwood Three in an abandoned warehouse. Gwen Cooper = awesome. |
|
1. Olivia Dunham (Fringe): What Agent Dunham has been through would crush others. Visiting another dimension, returning to her own at high speed through a car window, the death and impersonation of her closest friend. And she’s trying to save the world from a parallel universe attack that will destroy us all. No complaining, no rolling around screaming. Olivia is all business and duty. |

As I was going through the list, I kept kinda going "Where's Olivia? I mean she's got to be on here…" until somewhere around #15 I kinda went "Oh… I know who's Number One." And sure enough, there she was. Love it!
Olivia Dunham is made of awesome!
Cool list. So nice to see Chloe Sullivan make the Top 10, she's the best thing about Smallville. Yay for Ellen and Jo Harville, I've loved Ellen since Season 2 and Jo really grew on me this season.
Now for the disagreements. I hate Gwen Cooper..yes she was OK in "Children of Earth" but otherwise she's more annoying than fingernails on a chalkboard. Same goes for S4 Ruby (Genevieve Cortese) is a horrible actress. Katie Cassidy was a much better Ruby, IMO.
Admittedly, the actress playing Ruby wasn't up to par, but the character remained bad ass in her deceit and role in bringing about the apocalypse.
Great to see Chloe Sullivan on the list in the top 10! I'm greatly disappointed by her being sidelined this year and am boycotting the show in protest, but it's nice to see her still getting the recognition she deserves. Go Chloe!
Go Olivia Dunham!!! Deffinitely one of the best female characters out there. Also Go Chloe on the Top 10!
I loved Hermione and Bellatrix in here , awesome!!
