Preview: Day of the Triffids

By Lisa Fary

I’m not proud to say that, as a child, I was afraid of plants. Not all plants, just plants that were bigger than me (considering I’m a runty thing, that meant most plants).

All because of this:

That is a killer plant from the 1962 adaptation of Day of the Triffids. An apocalyptic world where everyone has been blinded and the plant are organizing? That’s scary stuff! At the time, triffids, along with the killer tree from Poltergeist were the scariest things I’d ever seen. To this day, I can’t stand to have a tree outside my bedroom window.

BBC has remade Day of the Triffids as a two part miniseries which will air on December 28th and 29th in the UK (BBC One @ 9PM). They haven’t shown us anything more than sneaky vines, but I’m intrigued by the preview clips:

Lisa Fary is a graduate of the creative writing program at Florida State University and holds an advanced degree in Special Education. Her earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She’s angry that it’s almost 2010 and she still doesn’t have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
