Funny that Watchmen is on this list for not "kowtowing", when in fact, that is EXACTLY what Zack Snyder did. He omitted LARGE portions of the source material and then released a version that wasn't "his" in theaters. Through the Watchmen FILM we can witness one of the purest examples of it is to "kowtow".

-Cool soundtrack containing "best of" songs...check

-Slow motion during said songs to force an emotion in the audience that a weak director cannot create on his own merit. A technique demonstrated weekly on the CW formerly WB...check

-Extended sex scene so the adults can say "This is a comic book movie for US!"....check

-How can the director make it any clearer this is NOT for kids? MORE BLUE PENIS....check.

Being "dumb down" was the Watchmen's problem. Thank God for chapter stops so I can get to all the Rorschach scenes.

I like this side a lot more than the first part(though i loved that you had the devil wear's prada). It's great to see Monsoon Wedding get some play. Pan's Labyrinth is great and beautiful film, though I've always found it kind of hard to re-watch. It has this very slow pace. The movie almost feels like it's floating to me(whatever that means). Also, Royal Tenenbaums is an interesting choice. I can never finish the movie. It's so depressing I have shut it off.

these lists are awesome, lisa! how did you come up with them?? my memory of movies i've watched is terrible. and man, i 100% agree with you on pan's labrynth. that movie was frickin' amazing: cinematography was flawless and stunning, while the story-telling and acting were so fluid and heart-breaking. i cried. oh soo much! and i appreciate the appreciation for kiss kiss bang bang. that movie was super smart, and super fun. (and you're dead on about burton-big fish, and the royal tenenbaums is sooo wes anderson's best film.) some other thoughts: i also think minority report was a pretty underrated movie, as well as danny boyle's sunshine and... well, of course i'm partial to serenity. :)

I have a head for useless information. :) When I started thinking about the list, these were honestly the ones that just floated to the top of my head. Then I went back and looked at lists of movies released by year to make sure I wasn't forgetting something.

I had no idea the Will Smith Oldboy was dead--YAY! I read that Speilberg was attached to that too, at one point (could have just been a rumor) but I'm glad it's not happening--that remake would have been terrible. My favorite of Park Chan Wook's Vengeance Trilogy is Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, which I can stomach on a day to day basis better than Oldboy (as brilliant as that film is, Oldboy is not something I can just pick up and watch whenever).

And I'm so happy to see Lynch love and Lost in Translation love, and even Batman Begins love, which is totally better than The Dark Knight.
