Fight Fest:Kicking Ass On Stage Never Looked So Good

by Jenn Kim

MAN I love me some good fighting. I love watching it, I love participating in it, and I love instigating it. No, I kid, I kid, I’m actually a pacifist at heart. (Sort of.) But choreographed fighting and martial arts? It’s so hot right now! Choreographed fighting and martial arts on a stage? Um, geekyfightgasms to ensue for all, HELLO. That’s why I’m pretty sure that Fight Fest, the theater festival dedicated solely to the awesomeness of stage combat and Fight Play, is in actuality a whisperer of sweet, sweet geekyfightgasmic dreams.

Battling it out at The Brick Theater in Williamsburg, New York, Fight Fest is curated by a group that can only be considered New York Fight Theater royalty: Timothy Haskell (creator of Road House, Nightmare: New York’s Most Horrifying Haunted House and The Jaded Assasin); Abby Marcus and Qui Nguyen of Vampire Cowboys (the theater troupe I’ve had a flaming love affair with ever since I saw the likes of Soul Samurai and Fight Girl Battle World), and Michael Gardner and the staff at The Brick (creators of The Kung Fu Importance of Being Earnest and Macbeth Without Words) collaborated to create a three-week long festival starring New York’s most talented Fight Theater artists. Long-time fans of the genre and supporters of each other’s works, these theater icons have found a way to promote Fight Play in the most festive way possible.

Running now, from December 1st to December 20th, Fight Fest consists of cabarets and mainstage shows you won’t want to miss. Seriously, with names like “Ninja Cherry Orchard,” “Butterfly, Butterfly, Kill Kill Kill!” and “Craven Monkey and the Mountain of Carnage,” these shows will drop-kick you with sheer badassery.

To buy tickets and see the full scheduled list of shows, go here. And then go to The Brick Theater, where you’re guaranteed to learn a thing or two about kicking ass.
