I need the human element of these series in other mangas and animes, can someone tell me about any other title that exhibits as much quality of story arcs and visuals as this one? I'm a very picky boy that is REALLY tired of superpowered manga and is looking for the REAL THING. Monster is and will always be my most precious gift.

I thought I outgrew anime - but then I came across Monster as an accident (a friend offered to lend her anime magazine to me for a while, and it had the synopsis.) It's probably the only series I really like up to this date (not to mention my personal favorite), and the only series I'll still like when I'll be much much older.

I'm pretty speechless already, as many people have said all I would have wanted to say about the series. All I'm left to say in my speechlessness is that it's AWESOME, hands down.

One of the things which kept me really glued to the series is how human the characters are, and just how much you can really feel every scene - you would forget that you are watching through a screen and instead feel like you're the fugitive in Germany, holding a gun in your hand. Even if some characters (notably Runge and Ad- "Robert") annoyed me so much, that just proves the artistry in the series - you empathize with the characters, and I loved them all as a result. Never read the manga version yet, but the anime itself is really good (good enough for me to break my old record of repeating an entire series five times), so I have high expectations.

I have to say that the jump rope scene bugged me a lot - it was really skippy when I watched it, and I kept rewinding to check if it was my CD which was horrible. I watched it over and over (as with the series itself), and I guess it really was a horrible animation cycle.

I secretly wished that they'd make a local dub for Monster here, but knowing how horrible many local versions for otherwise good series turned out, I wouldn't hope for it anymore.

I'm somewhat upset over the American-dub version, mainly over the fact that they had to shorten the episodes for about 2 minutes. (The average time for each episode, from intro to the very end of the ending theme song is approximately 22 minutes and 15 seconds.)

There goes my two cents (or maybe five, with the length I've used.)

I'm so possessed by the storybooks, as if they're another character. Reminds me of what Edgar Allen Poe did with his buildings/houses, they were treated like another character. If memory serves he even wrote manifesto's on inanimate objects as characters or something of the like. Your comments. Also, I've recommended onemanga.com to a business associate/friend in Taiwan, and will recommend your site as well, but do you know of a chinese/taiwanese site for her to read the full manga version? Thanks and best regards.

I have to agree with you. I've been rather disappointed with how the SyFy airing of Monster has been handled...frankly, I had hoped that what I perceived as an altered soundtrack and shorter episodes was just my imagination, but there you are. I would also like to have an unedited version of the series, but if that happens, I have no doubt that it'll take a long time.

325 minutes for 15 episodes means this "official release" will be comprised of the patch-job episodes Syfy's airing, trimmed for time and with a butchered soundtrack (what to facilitate the shorter scenes, and all). Cutting 2 minutes and 40 seconds from each episode is, like you said, a travesty. I'm extremely disappointed. Monster's one of my all-time favorites. I really hope they eventually release a completely unfooled-around-with version. THAT I'll buy.

Yes! You should definitely try it! I mean, anime is like any kind of television -- there are great ones and there are subpar ones. I'll watch anything, but I'm pretty particular about what I'll recommend. Can't go wrong with Monster, though!

Wow! This article is great! I'm not the biggest into anime, but that's due more to a lack of exposure than interest. Reading this, though, makes me think I'm seriously missing something!

Awesome article! Monster is a very VERY good story. I work at a comic shop in Philly and I recommend this book to everyone, manga fans and American comics fans alike.
