if you download the template and open it up (it's a PDF file, so acrobat reader should do just fine), you'll see the instructions. The template is basically a negative – with all the grey areas marked so you know what to cut out.

If you're unsure about your carving abilities, or have a small pumpkin), you can also cut out the grey areas of the template to make a stencil, then spray paint your pumpkin.
