The little kits you can buy at places like Wal-Mart and Target do the job just fine.

Just remember that the trick to carving anything more complex than a couple of triangles and a snaggle-tooth grin is to scrape out as much of the inside of the pumpkin (on the side you want to carve on) as possible. I use a large, metal serving spoon.

When I'm preparing a pumpkin for carving, I generally scrape away until I have only 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch depth.

A good trick to measuring your depth is to take a sewing needle, mark it about 1/4 of an inch from the point, and as you scrape, stick the pin into the pumpkin. If you can see the point on the inside AND the 1/4 inch mark on the outside, you've scraped away enough.

is there a simpler way to find out how to do these carvings i dont get it?

    • if you download the template and open it up (it's a PDF file, so acrobat reader should do just fine), you'll see the instructions. The template is basically a negative – with all the grey areas marked so you know what to cut out.

If you're unsure about your carving abilities, or have a small pumpkin), you can also cut out the grey areas of the template to make a stencil, then spray paint your pumpkin.
