Very nicely said, Lisa.
I also think that a shared crime of both Vampire Diaries (yikes, I almost abbreviated that as VD) and Twilight is centuries-old vampires going to high school. You're a vampire. If you were going to learn that stuff, presumably you've done so by now, or could do it on your own without the presence of obnoxious children and emo music. And not, y'know, during the day when any self-respecting vampire would burst into flames or at least smolder a bit while running around outside.
Right! A centuries old vampire going to school and falling in “luuvv” is basically the creepy older guy hanging around the parking lot.
And I am totally abbreviating the title to “VD” in the future.
Dark Shadows what a bast form the past!
I watched the last few minutes of the show waiting for SPN to start (that's a real show, people, watch it!).
Dialogue about killed me. "Are you alright?" "Ask me tomorrow." Ew.
My immediate in-head response when she said that was, "Bitch, he's asking you now!"
When she said that, my immediate in-head response was, “Bitch, I’m asking you now!”
"Elena’s parents died to give her depth. We know she has depth because she writes in a journal. Sometimes, Elena writes in her journal in a graveyard (henceforth, the EmoYard) while she looks meaningfully at her parents’ headstone (get used to meaningful looks, because if the kids aren’t talking inanely, they’re looking at each other meaningfully – at one point, there was a love pentagram of meaningful looks flying around a history class for several minutes straight)."
And this is exactly why I won't be watching this show. Because teenagers are angsty enough WITHOUT vampires being involved. Joss Whedon is the only person who can make that work.
You forgot to mention the part about the characters all looking like each other, with perfectly shaped faces and the same haircut and makeup job. Except for the bad vampire. He looks different, so we can tell he's the bad guy. Otherwise, he'd be just like everyone else.
As for the Dark Shadows ripoff, I couldn't agree more except for the fact that it also steals from Twilight, and Buffy, and 90210. Been there, watched that. Plus, don't forget, Dark Shadows was much much BETTER than this ever could hope to be! At least Dark Shadows was carving out new territory for itself, was darn spooky and creepy and just plain messed up – all those characters were different, acted different, and LOOKED different. They all had issues and the whole world raced home to watch it. Vampire Diaries will never ever ever come close to being even a smidgen as good as that.
Yeah, Dark Shadows fans like to rant and rave. : D

What? Oh, sorry, felt compelled to go watch Buffy reruns. Y'know, the ones where Angel got over the broody thing by becoming Angelus.
Broody guy obsessed because Elena is _not_ the long dead doppelganger is all the more "er?"
I'm glad someone pointed out that this show is stunningly middle of the road. It seemed like it was getting way too much praise. I'm just not understanding how people fall in love on these shows after one conversation.
I don't think we can accurately say VD steals from Twilight because this novel series came out in 1991 – Twilight started in 2005. Although, I'm sure the idea to turn it into a TV series came along with the success of Twilight.
And yes, Dark Shadows was teh awesome. In elementary school, I used to rush straight home to watch eps on channel six.
Because they were meant to be! That's true love! If you didn't fall in love with your significant other when you first laid eyes, then it's not real!!!!!!
Or something like that. Teenagers believe that crap and it seems that they're the market for VD.
"…it seems that they're the market for VD."
::snerk:: I see what you did there.
