5 Reasons Why Season 5 of Supernatural is Going to Kick Apocalyptic Ass

by Jenn Kim

I don’t know about you, but I’m frickin’ excited about this season’s Supernatural. Usually a show loses steam by the time it enter its 5th season, but Super ended last season with its highest ratings ever. And with reason. I mean, will we ever tire of the complexities and nuances of the Winchester boys’ relationship? Will we ever grow weary of the man-tears and the heart-wrenching angst? Will we ever cease to marvel at Jared Padalecki’s physical burgeoning, or Jensens Ackles’ weathered beauty? No, no, of course not. Never, ever, ever. Which is why, despite knowing that Paris Effin’ Hilton is going to be guest-starring at some point this season (hopefully I’ll let that go with time), we remain pumped and excited for what promises to be another awesomely tormented season of brooding hotness.

*Mild to heavy spoilers to come.

lucifer5. The Rise of Lucifer. Season 4 ended with Sammy inadvertently opening the last seal, resulting in Sammy and Dean clutching each other as blinding light shot out of the cracked floor. “He’s coming,” Sammy choked out, obviously terrified. And is he ever. Mark Pellegrino, of awesome Dexter and Lost fame, joins season 5 as Satan, aka the Prince of Darkness, aka Lucifer, aka the Big Bad One himself. Yet Kripke and the Super writers of course keep it interesting: Lucifer won’t be the pitchfork spearing, terrifying monster you’d expect. Instead, Kripke says he’ll be portrayed as a “soft-spoken, strangely sympathetic” character. A vulnerable devil with complex, human emotions? Awesoooome.

4. Ruby’s Dead. Halle-frickin-lujah. I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that season 4′s Ruby kind of totally sucked.  Maybe it was because she got Sammy all hooked on demon blood (that frickin’ pusher) and consequently tore the brothers apart. Maybe it was because she wound up being a duplicitous, evil demon who betrayed and used Sammy in the hopes of bringing about the end of the world (and after she was bumping uglies with him, too!). Maybe it was because Katie Cassidy was so much more convincing and fun as a badass demon, she made Genevieve Cortese seem like a completely lame chick with a mild speech impediment. Regardless, Ruby’s FINALLY GONE, and I’m definitely looking forward to a season without her.

3. Bobby’s Actually Going to Become a 3 Dimensional Character. I love Bobby. Bobby’s safe. Bobby has an awesome beard. Bobby’s the father-figure the boys so desperately need. Bobby’s effin’ miraculous in his vast knowledge of everything. And because of this deep affection I have for Bobby, I’d like to see him become more than a walking replacement for Papa Winchester’s magical journal of answers. Jim Beaver has hinted that something absolutely batsh*t crazy will happen with his character in the first two episodes of the season, and I, for one, can’t wait to find out what it is.

2. The Brothers are Back Together Again. Man o’ man. The Winchester boys’ strong relationship was pretty much massacred last season, what with Dean being all suspicious, judgy and concerned for Sammy and his demon-blood addiction, and Sammy so desperately trying to prove that he, despite being the younger sibling, had the whole stopping-the-apocalypse thing under control. You know, typical sibling rivalry stuff. But poor Sammy. He was so wrong, and Dean was so right. That’s going to be aw-kwarrrrd for him as they attempt to mend their relationship. It should be interesting to see whether Dean will be able to trust Sammy again without throwing in too many “I told you sos,” and whether Sammy will be able to deal with feeling so very much like an emasculated, helpless younger brother who constantly needs protecting.

1. Misha Collins is a Cast Regular. It took awhile for me to come around to Castiel and the whole angel plot, but Castiel’s obvious love and affection for Dean, along with the way he so hotly sacrificed himself to do Dean’s bidding, made me fall a little bit in love with him. Plus, the tension between him and Dean …it’s frickin’ PALPABLE!  Can the writers make them gay for each other, already? (Plus, Misha Collins proves to be both hilarious and charming in interviews, so he is now officially on the Jenn-Kim-stalking list.)

  1. It's been a LONG time since I've been this excited for the return of a TV show – maybe since Twin Peaks. I only started watching during Season Four, but am already completely hooked on SPN.

I started watching last Season and now I feel like I should just STOP and start over at Season 1. But then I'd be behind FOREVER (because we all know this is one show that will never get cancelled). What to do, what to do.

  6. Teller says:

So good! I love Dean's storyline. I love the mocking of the fandom even though I'm probably one of the people being mocked. I love the final scene. It hurt so bad, but in the best possible way.
