Legion: Everything We’ve Seen Before, Plus Paul Bettany

The trailer for Legion was the first thing I saw this morning, right before going into a meeting. I always have some dread going into those things. Watching this trailer didn’t help.

Legion looks like everything we’ve seen before, but it’s rated R, so we might get to see Paul Bettany naked.

I’m not a biblical kind of person, but I do enjoy biblical horror (provided the resolution to the earthly biblical conflict doesn’t involve all humans wearing a WWJD bracelet). The Prophecy and Stigmata are two of my favorites, and Supernatural went in that direction last season (which I loved).

Anyway, here’s the red-band trailer for Legion:

Legion could use a bit of Sam and Dean Winchester. I mean, a run down, out of the way diner is their turf, and they’re kinda fighting the same fight. It would be appropriate for a black Impala to pull up. Or just drive by.

I miss Supernatural.

BTW, is there something in the Bible that implies that the archangel Gabriel is a tool? Because he looks like a tool here, just like he was in The Prophecy and Constantine.

  1. Mmmmm, Paul Bettany ….. A Knight's Tale and Wimbeldon are two of my fave films …. Thanks for the headfs-up! :) And oh look, it's Joshua from Dark Angel/the psycho merc who killed Ben's daughter in Lost/The Blob from Wolverine! :D

What an interesting cast. Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, the guy who played Zipacna on SG-1, the kid from Slingblade all growed up, and a girl who looks familiar despite my never having seen anything she's been in but whose voice I kinda know from Robot Chicken. I just might go see this. Not so much for the horror part, but for the last-stand-y aspect of it.

It's been a while since I've actually read the bits of the Bible about the archangels, but I don't think Gabriel is a tool (i.e. a jerk) so much as he's a tool in the sense of "the sword of God". He's a soldier following orders, and he doesn't even consider questioning them because they come from God, so it must be the right thing to do. If God says, "Take out Michael and the unborn child he's trying to protect," Gabriel will do that. It's a tricky mindset to get a handle on, particularly when the guy playing it in this instance has portrayed a lot of truly evil villains in his career.

But Paul Bettany looks awesome! All archangels should wear leather and look awesome. Also, I love Dennis Quaid. Also, yes, Gabriel is a tool and none of the other angels ever invite him over to play Rock Band.
