Comics: Robot 13

By Lisa Fary

When your first series features a zombie-fighting, Elvis look-a-like, where do go from there for your next series? Steampunk, skull-headed robots and tentacle creatures are always a good place to start.

robot13-coverRobot 13 is the new comic from Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford, who previously brought us KING!.

In issue #1, fishermen catch a robot in their net and are quickly set upon by a giant tentacle monster. However, long term, Hall says that it’s like Frankenstein meets Homer’s Odyssey; a thing created by science goes on a hero’s journey of sorts to find out who he really is.

Like KING!, Robot 13 is heavy on action, with the main fight/ action sequence running eleven straight pages, nearly half the length of the book.  This is bookended by exposition of the robot’s origins.

Artistically, it’s heavily influenced by Mike Mignola’s style. I like Bradford’s story telling ability and hoped that his work would rely less on the Mignola aesthetic moving forward from KING!. I’d also like to see more story and shorter action sequences in future issues.

Robot 13
, even though it stars a skull-headed robot, has a timeless story and has the makings of a good series. Check out the previews below:

Lisa Fary’s early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl. She thinks diagramming sentences is a fun alternative to Sudoku.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
