ITA - Sam's storyline seems over, he was only important to free Lucifer, now it's all up to Dean to save the world with Cas at his side.

Every other character; Dad, Sam ad even Bobby have been dragged in the dirt dirt to make Dean look better. It wasn't necessary and I am done with Kripke. S5 will be an interly new show, one that will fit CW better.

Show is now so predictable and boring story-wise that only the acting of the leads save it. And with JP in the background for a third season in a row, I am gone.

Watching Cas and Dean discuss and make eyes at each other (I also suspect kripke will go the triangle-route, Sam and Cas fight over Dean) is too soapy for me to digest.

Enjoyed the article, but wanted to point out a minor discrepancy (because the original had a bit more comedic value). Dean is offered 2 virgins and 70 less than virginal maids. Minor point, but had me guffawing nonetheless.

Wow. What a rollercoaster ride. Another great and insightful review, Sylvia, and I agree with every word. Especially your preferred ending! *g*. Oh, how I hope the Kripke reads and takes it on board,

You and the others above have pretty much said everything for me, but I have to say one thing. The ending. Another Kripke-Cliffhanger. Lucifer indeed Rising, and the Winchesters clutching each other like kids in a panic. As well they might. They are at Ground freaking-Zero of the most toxic of paranormal bombs, and I am in dread of what that might do to them. If Castiel, a mere[!] angel!grunt, can burn out Pam's eyes, what will the rising of a fallen Archangel do to the human bystanders?

Is it September yet?

Thanks for your reviews, Sylvia, they are always so good. For me, Supernatural has wasted so much potential I could weep. I enjoy what I get, but it's the sadness of knowing the many opportunities lost for this show that do me in. I can't honestly believe that this is Sam's story, that a lead character would be so underutilized that long-time fans would debate whether to continue watching anymore, and that Jared's obvious acting talents would be sidelined for guest stars. Pitiful, pififul, pitiful. I doubt I'll ever look at another Kripke project ever again - I am that disappointed. I can't believe this is the fruition of a 5 year plan. I think Kripke just knew where he wanted it to start and then where he wanted it to end. All the middle stuff is gobbledy-gook. I watch it still, this show is my obsession and I have not quit obsessing yet, but in my heart of hearts, I feel let down by Show. It is what it is, which for some people is genius, but I want more for it, and for myself as well.

(again with the multiple comments haha)
As a committed Samgirl I would have loved to see more of Sam, but looking at the bigger picture, I can see what the writers were trying to do, although I know many don't share my opinion. I am disappointed at how the brothers seemed to be second priority to the angels/ruby/other demons and God and Lucifer who weren't even present, but I’m trying to keep an open mind. Hopefully i'll see you back here next season :) Take care.

Hi! I love reading your comments, thanks for sharing your thoughts! And I envy you for somehow being able to post such long comments...I have to separate mine into lots of little paragraphs and post multiple comments or it tells me they're too long haha.
I can't say I agree with your view of the season. Sure, it certainly wasn't amazing, but it was enough. I don't think the character of Sam was 'trashed'. Although the aspect of family and the relationship between the brothers, which is SPN’s main attribute, was definitely lost in many episodes, it improved a lot towards the end. I appreciate that kripke/the writers were trying to demonstrate Sam's descent into evil, demon blood addiction etc, and in retrospect I think they did it reasonably well.

part 3.
As for the comment Dean made last ep: “If you walk out that door, don’t you ever come back.” Although it did seem an out of character thing for Dean to say to his brother, I think the writers included it so that they could show Deans regret in this episode. Although it wasn't said out loud I don't think, you could tell that behind his anger Dean was so scared he would never see Sam again. I don't think Dean meant to say it, it just came out at his time of desperation, and he regretted it later.
Thank-you so much for all your reviews this season Sylvia! They have been so enjoying to read, as well as all of the comments people leave. It's so great that there's a place like this we can all come and discuss the show we love, and to vent our frustration after certain episodes haha. Thanks! I'll see you next season!

part 2.
I loved the scene where Sam gets the altered voice message from Dean...you described it perfectly. And I am SO HAPPY that Ruby is dead! We've all been waiting 2 whole seasons for that. About time! I'm so glad we got to see Sam and Dean as a united front again at the very end. They may not have reconciled or be very happy with each other, but at the very least they are on the same side. I was very sick of the separation between the brothers, and I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing our Winchesters acting brotherly again next season!

Hi!
I think this episode was a good wrap up for the season.
I am not happy with the angels. What are they even doing? Looking back on the season, the whole angel storyline seems even more meaningless. I wonder if Castiel and Anna will return next season...Castiel seemed to be in a pretty bad situation at the end though, so i'm not counting on his return. And that doesn't bother me at all. I'm so sick of the complicated angel vs. demon storyline, with Sam and Dean on the outskirts and constant mentions of God and Lucifer that don't seem to amount to anything. It just seems like too much fuss then it's worth. I just want to get back to Sam and Dean. The show was always meant to be essentially about the brothers, and I think that concept was lost this season.
That being said, I did enjoy the season for the most past :) I just hope show gets back to basics now, and focuses on what it's really about. Sam and Dean, saving people, hunting things! Your ending for next season sounds perfect :) I hope it's something along those lines.

I can't believe a season has gone by so quickly. Will you continue reviewing past episodes this summer, Sylvia?

I liked how Show ended it this season. It was a bit of a cliff-hanger (and I hate cliff-hangers) but wrapped up enough of the story line of this season to satisfy me and I was happy to see that I called Ruby's loyalties right :) I literally cheered when Dean stabbed her... I just KNEW she was up to something, even from the beginning.

Season 5 is going to be great, I'll see you there at the start line :)

(part 4)
The first ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r68ZBx3V8tk ) is a more conventional trailer she made for a CW/Supernatural contest she entered (that she undeservingly did not win), and the second ( http://www.vimeo.com/4672124 ) depicts emo dean struggling with the idea of having to kill sammy. though they’re season 2 clips, i think they register nicely with season 4, as well, what with dean's struggling with the idea of sam becoming something he can't control. again, i apologize for the spamming (i know, such poor blogging/comment form!), but i wanted to share our love for Show, and we would both be very honored if you’d watch them (they’re both under 2 minutes, i promise!!). :)

thank you again for providing me with so much Show-goodness; you are ridiculously awesome,

thank you again for providing me with so much Show-goodness; you are ridiculously awesome,

(part 3)
and i agree with you about the ruby-killing scene- dean was SO BEAUTIFUL as he was striding towards her with his knife and growling "i don't care," and it was SO NICE to see sammy and dean finally working together again to kill a no-good, evil demon. poor sammy. my heart really broke for him in this episode.

on another note, i don't mean to spam or wax on forever in this comment, but i really want to share these two trailers of Show my younger sister made. now as her older sister, i am proud of pretty much everything she has done in life, but i’m probably proudest (probably; i'm not sure, she's accomplished many things in life so far) of her being responsible for getting me to fall in love with Show, and her spending hours and days and weeks editing and combing through season 2 of Show to make these trailers. she also loves your reviews but hasn't been able to comment due to the fact that she in the midst of finishing her second year of law school. hehe but as her proud older sister, i must share and brag about her talent in film editing and capturing the wonderful essence of Show in less than 2 minutes.

i'm also so grateful that you went back to cover season 2, because after each episode i'll rewatch, i'll immediately look up your review on pink raygun like a frickin' crack addict. i therefore must thank you, and thank you for enhancing my Show experience all that much more!!

regarding this episode- wow, i didn't exactly see it coming, but i am SO HOT for soap angel now. seriously. all that care and love he has for dean...i thought there were literally FIREWORKS between the two, what with the echanged intense looks and sexual tension. sigh. it would be so awesome if soap angel and dean realized they were in love with each other. i wonder if show would ever go there for the fans (like the writers for xena did with xena and gabrielle!), but either way...i am loving soap angel. i felt like my heart was literally jumping out of its chest when he took out the knife and cut himself for dean.

dear sylvia,
i've dropped in a few times but never formally introduced myself- hello, i'm jenn kim and i also contribute to pinkraygun (though my chuck reviews are nowhere near as thorough or fun as your ones of Show!).

first off, i really have to thank you for igniting a love for sam that i did not know existed in me. prior to your reviews, (and this is going to sound quite blasphemous), i was unequivocally a dean/jensen girl, to the point of getting annoyed when sam would take up my special dean time. i'm not sure how you did it (actually, yes i am- it was the beautiful poetry you wrote regarding samhair and sam expressions and sam eyes), but now i love both sam and dean, and treasure every sam and dean moment on screen, thus making my Show time TWICE as enjoyable as it was before. i have been re-watching season 2 (which i think was Show's best season EVER), and am astounded to see how much more i love and enjoy each episode exponentially more than prior.

I don't think Dean is depicted as perfect by any means. The only reason the angels saved him from hell (or cared about him at all) is because he broke the first seal. He committed evil. For 10 years he tortured souls and enjoyed it. He was well on his way to becoming a demon. If the angels hadn't stepped in that is what would have happened. To take it one step further, I would say that Dean's choice to become a torturer was a selfish one. Completely understandable (I would have given in about 2 minutes after I got there) but selfish. He knew full well that the only person it benefitted was him. Sam's choices, while misquided and ultimately horrific, had at least the potential to serve a greater good. Yes, there were selfish reasons tied up in there (revenge), but Sam is human, and human motivations are rarely simple and straighforward. Unfortunately, it turned out that the only ones actually interested in the greater good were the Winchesters, so they were left to sort of flounder on their own.

Another lovely review Sylvia. My Tuesdays won't be the same without your pieces to look forward to over the summer.

The episode itself underwhelmed me. I liked that Bobby verbally smacked Dean out of his moping. Though I found it interesting that just a few episodes Dean was telling, nearly accusing, Sam of being like John in a clear insult, but now all of a sudden John is something to be defended? I have to agree with Bobby on his final point, Dean is a better man than John. He's still far from perfect, but he's better than his father. I liked Dean's irreverent behaviour in the angel's room. Others have pointed out, and I agree with them, that the food may have been more than just a distraction for Dean. The way that Castiel yanked it away from him the one time Dean was going to give in and eat some makes it seem as though there was more to the story, a little Persephone trap perhaps? I wouldn't put anything past these angels.

Short of having Sam develop an appetite for babies, is there anything more they can do to utterly trash the character? I wish they'd left him dead back in Cold Oak, if this is all he was ever going to come to. The only good part has been watching Jared hone his skills, which has been a joy to watch. Other than that, why is Sam even there? Oh, right, as a plot device and a handy way to highlight Dean's overwhelming awesomeness. Got it. At least this season finally ending bears out my pessimism that's been simmering ever since In the Beginning. "Just wait, Kripke will even it all out." "They'll fix it, there's so much of the season left yet, they'll show us more about Sam." "Trust Kripke, he knows what he's doing." That's all you would hear if you complained early on. Well now the season is said and done and just as I predicted, they did exactly nothing to fix any balance issues, or show us enough of Sam's perspective to make his actions work. Talk about reconning, they totally retconned Sam's entire character, and threw him to the wolves while they were at it. And the most frustrating thing is that they could have accomplished the exact same goals, had Sam do the exact same end actions without destroying the character in the process if they'd just put a little effort into it. And, you know, torn their eyes away from Dean's oh so sparkly awesomeness and the glowing fabulousness that is the Soap Angel. But instead they chose to screw the character, and his fans, over.

I've seen others put it this way, and I feel the same. Betrayed. We put just as much heart, soul, and money into this show as any other fans, but apparently we matter not at all. This season was like a big fat middle finger from Kripke to anyone who dared to not worship at Dean's feet. And as far as next season goes, why should we even bother? If they can't be troubled to include Sam in things when he actually still had a part to play, why would they do so now that he's shot his "payload" and is a literal footnote to the story? Never say never, but if the new season started tomorrow, I don't know that I'd bother to tune in for the continuing story of Dean "The most awesome person who ever lived" Winchester, his bff Castiel "Heaven's dreamiest angel" and, oh yeah, Dean's loser brother, old whatshisname.

Very nice review. I'll miss reading these over the summer! I love your ending for the show, by the way. Are you listening, Kripke??

I was wondering if you'd touch on my favorite moment from this episode--and you did. That moment when Sam listens to the altered voice mail really hit me. It was acutely painful and at the same time, amazing to watch. The show is great in so many ways, but I love terrific acting, and this the show delivers like no other.

Have a wonderful summer, and I'll be looking forward to your reviews--oh, yeah, and that show!--in the fall.
