Lost: Whatever Happened, Happened

By Lisa Fary

I shouldn’t take so much pleasure in seeing Kate get rejected by both Jack and Saywer in the space of one episode.

Kate: I miss the old Jack who told me what to do!

Jack: You didn’t like the old me. (pouts)

Then, later in the jungle. . .

Sawyer: I was no more fit to be your boyfriend than I was to be a father.

Bam! Rejected!

She’s not totally destined to be dried up old maid, though. Ben’s abusive father seemed to be up for a Craphole Island love connection with Kate. Will Kate slum it with Papa Linus?

During their blood transfusion-side conversation, Papa Linus mentioned that the boy needed a mother. Kate may be open to that after giving up Aaron. A 12 year old is not as cuddly and lovable as a baby or a dog, but she showed far more human compassion for the kid than Dr. Douchebag.

BTW, Jack. You’re still not rocking with the plucked chicken look. The waxed chest thing is a look for younger guys than you. Let the chest hair grow back.  Sawyer has chest hair.

By the end of the episode, I found myself not hating Kate so much. Oh, the hate is still there. But, she redeemed herself in a big way when she did the right thing, gave Aaron to his grandmother, and told the truth about the other survivors.  I actually teared up at that scene.

I also found myself yelling, “Oh, crap!” at the end of the episode (just like I used to!) and really looking forward to next Wednesday. I loved loved loved the look on Big Ben’s face when he woke up after the plane crash. . . and Locke was staring down at him from the bedside. Locke isn’t the type to let a little thing like his murder go unpunished and Ben knows it.

Best episode since season two!

Lisa Fary’s early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl. She thinks diagramming sentences is a fun alternative to Sudoku.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

Oh, I disagree. I think you SHOULD take pleasure in Kate getting rejected. When I first saw that this was going to be a Kate episode – *huge groan* HOWEVER, I do agree with you that they've redeemed her a bit. She actually *gasp* DID SOMETHING this episode. She MADE A DECISION and FOLLOWED THROUGH ON IT. Yes, there was Patsy Cline in this episode again (seriously, someone get Kate an iTunes card), but it was a solid, heartbreaking story for her.

It helped that she did something selfless without ulterior motives (actually TWO somethings selfless!). I'm hoping that now that Jack and Sawyer seem to be totally out of the picture for her, she can get back to something like character development.
