[...] I didn’t write about it last week because I wasn’t feeling that great on Friday night and didn’t really have the energy–and also because it didn’t really provoke any strong reactions in me. I love Eliza Dushku–Faith is possibly my favorite Buffy character–and I trust Whedon enough not to insult my intelligence. I found a few interesting takes on the first episode here, here and particularly here and an interview with Whedon here. [...]

Man, I kinda always thought Eliza was really comfortable with her sexuality, it was interesting to learn she is fascinated with researching human sexuality, and she is SO much better looking than Kinsey was! I'll volunteer myself for the study Eliza, heh. GREAT question QuoterGal.

I agree QuoterGal; I appreciate his honesty, which is a characteristic (of many) that sets him apart from the standard Hollywood fodder and why we love him; that said, I second your concerns and it will be interesting to see how it plays out; I'm concerned about the purchasing aspect of this as well, as to my understanding these "dolls" can be rented out and programmed for anything...it'll be interesting to see the gender politics play out with the male and female dolls. Have you seen the Grindhouse trailer for Dollhouse and Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles? They pinpoint Cameron and Echo and film a very Grindhousey commercial highlighting the typical stuff: boobs, fighitng, action, things blowing up. I loved Tarentino's Grindhouse, but also recognize the objectification in that; I thought it was an interesting choice; you can see it on Fox's website....

That was a great question, quotergal, and I'm so glad you got your turn to talk to Joss, Lisa! It must have been quite an experience.

His answer is thoughtful and thought-provoking. And maybe a just a little bit plain old provoking. Sexuality, stereotypes and exploitation are worthy subjects but I get the impression that we will not be seeing any sort of adult discussion about this because, as Joss says, the network is not interested in that. We shall see. I'm still looking forward to it :)

Thanks, Lisa - I like the way you asked the question(s) - and I thought Joss' answer was pretty thoughtful and honest. I respect the way he says straight out he doesn't know if "Dollhouse" crosses the line from talking about the creepy to being the creepy. In a recent interview, Joss had said something like this - had they gone too far? - but it was in a much more general way, and now I know that he was talking about this concern. I *get* that he's having to deal with a lot of different voices and forces and opinions about this issue, and I'm glad - but not surprised - that he's taking the questions seriously.

For the rest - as far as the show's concerned - we'll just have to wait and see. I still think the campaign within itself seems pretty exploitive - and though I am truly glad that Eliza is enjoying it and doesn't feel exploited by it, I think the campaign's meaning & effect goes way beyond just the question of what Eliza's comfortable with or what she's choosing to explore and how she's choosing to do it. Eliza could be having the time of her life posing for photos, and the result can nonetheless represent a limited, sterotypical way of viewing & evaluating women. For me, it's also about the (seemingly) sexist and stale stereotypes this campaign employs, and to what effect. Additionally, it's about what (and how much) the promo campaign ultimately represents the spirit and content of the show. That I won't know until I've been able to see at least a few episodes - and I'm willing to give it some time & benefit of the doubt.

So - thanks for asking this for me - and obviously, on behalf of others, as well. I think I also have Lioness, Legion and NotaViking to thank for seconding, thirding and fourthing.
