Making Our Way: Pimping Webcomics

By Lisa Fary

I don’t know if anyone says “pimping” anymore.

One of the things we’ve learned with Pink Raygun is that it’s not enough to put stuff out there and hope that people will find it. You have to find ways to get the word out, promote it, sell it.

It’s the same with Zuda. It’s not enough to submit the comic, you’ve got to draw attention to it, give people a reason to support it, and sometimes that means getting more creative than simply talking up the story or the artwork, or saying, “My comic is awesome!”

Other than bright, shiny colors in a comic world of darkness and a pace that would make an ADHD fiend pay attention, why should readers support Lasers, Dragons and Lies on Zuda?  Here are two reasons that have nothing to do with how good it is:

1. You get to fight zombies.
We dig zombies. Really. Pink Raygun even programs an annual Zombie Week around Easter with features such as The American Zombie’s Guide to Election 2008 and Planning Your Zombie Party. But, there is such a thing as overexposure and zombies are more overexposed than Lindsay Lohan’s naughty bits. They’re all over the place, on stands, on Zuda (zombies, not Lindsay Lohan’s naughty bits). The initial zombie movie craze degenerated from Night of the Living Dead, the Citizen Kane of zombie movies, to such turdflowers as Zombie Lake and Sexy Nights of the Living Dead, and it’s going to happen in comics, too, if you don’t stop it. Enough with the zombie stink, already! Pick up a virtual shovel and fight the zombie invasion!

BTW, your vote on Zuda is your virtual shovel.

2. If it wins, we can move.
John and I currently live in a craphole apartment over a Chinese restaurant next to a pr0n theater. It’s got character, but it also has a crooked floor, funny smells, and a pounding pr0n soundtrack. If Lasers, Dragons & Lies wins, we’ll be able to put together first month, last month and deposit and upgrade from our craphole to a dump!

The winner of Zuda’s monthly competition is determined by adding the number of votes, faves, page views, comments, and star ratings, plugging the sum into a quadratic equation, and multiplying the result by factorial five.

To see Lasers, Dragons & Lies, go to www.lasersdragonslies.com.  Once there, give it a read in full screen (there’s an icon on the bottom right of the comic reader window). If you’d like to fight the zombie invasion and/ or help us move, give it a vote, a fave and a comment.

Lisa Fary’s early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl. She thinks diagramming sentences is a fun alternative to Sudoku.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

Is there a deadline to vote? My computer is busted and I can't read it at work. :(

@ Rhea – Voting runs throughout the rest of the month. While it doesn't look too promising for a win right now, it's still important that I make a good showing – it can only help for a couple of other Zuda competition submissions that Lisa and I are working on right now. Thanks for asking about the vote!Pink Raygun News, Reviews and Interviews for Fangirls… and boysWhere Tank Girl and Hello Kitty Meet.
