I think Sam has always bent towards the more lawful side of life - well, at least as much as he can given their lifestyle - so being thrown in jail, with real criminals (the Winchesters are not, no matter what Hendrickson says) and the very real possibility of not getting out again... I can see why he would be very twitchy about that. Of course, it also points out how much Sam has changed. I reckon that if this was a case they were handling now, in season 4, he would be far more pragmatic about it. Just get in there, do the job, get out again. And he certainly wouldn’t allow Dean to take a fall for him, no matter how staged. Mmm... just imagine Sam/Jared’s current physique in that orange jumpsuit... Ooh. I need to watch this episode again.
