Continuing my post....

I like your take on an alternative ending. Would definitely have worked. But I just don’t think the powers that be would have been comfortable with Sam stepping up to the plate so physically to save Dean’s ass, not at that point in the series. Though I agree with you that it would have been very welcome, and given us the firm idea that Sam actually does not want to be messed with. Just one quick scene would have been enough to plant that seed. Also, the actor playing Deacon was wonderfully snarly and mean, having him turn all friendly was almost like a shock to the system – I just don’t know how else the boys could have got out so easily.

*dashes off to watch again*

PS Merry Christmas! Or Happy Holidays! :)

Ooh. I need to watch this episode again. If only to study the differences in their uniforms that you so clearly pointed out here. And no, I too am not a shallow, opportunistic fangirl.

I also really enjoyed the differences between the brothers in their responses to being in jail. I think Sam has always bent towards the more lawful side of life - well, at least as much as he can given their lifestyle - so being thrown in jail, with real criminals (the Winchesters are not, no matter what Hendrickson says) and the very real possibility of not getting out again... I can see why he would be very twitchy about that. Of course, it also points out how much Sam has changed. I reckon that if this was a case they were handling now, in season 4, he would be far more pragmatic about it. Just get in there, do the job, get out again. And he certainly wouldn’t allow Dean to take a fall for him, no matter how staged. Mmm... just imagine Sam/Jared’s current physique in that orange jumpsuit...

Hi!

Wow, you are going to post your review on a Sunday. That is really cool. : D
I will be looking for it a week from this Sunday/

Yes that should give me plenty of time to put together my next list.

Thanks for the sentiments. I can't wait until tomorrow.

Yes, I agree with you. I always enjoying watching the boys dither. It doesn't matter where. It only matters that they 'dither' and that they 'dither' quite well. It is always nice when they do find a different place to banter.

Take care

Hi Sylvia,

I liked this episode but didn't love it either.

Would have loved your gritty realism version instead. How awesome that would have been.

Anyway, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

Hey there! Christmas is such a busy time for so many, thanks for taking a break to come by and post. I'll be posting WIAWSNB a week from Sunday; that should give you plenty of time for your next list. : D

I think a lot of people felt the way you did about this ep, lots of promise, fun little bits, but not, overall, a dramatically strong ep. Still, I did love watching the boys dither in the "yard," because they're dithering and it's a new locale for them.

Merry Christmas, and take care!

Oh, yes, the bit where we don't know for sure what's going to happen as the boys are digging, whether Hendrickson knows or not? You're right, very tense, very well done. I loved Hendrickson's exasperation there; the boys surely have him on the run!

And I was surprised too, about Deacon, and it was a fun scene, but totally anticlimactic; I wanted something starker. Just me and my little fantasy world, here.

Didn't know that about Cliff; I've met him but didn't recognize him!

Merry Christmas, Robin!!

Hey, there! I personally think any fan writer could have come up with a more satisfactory ending than the one we got, gritty or funny, it wouldn't have mattered. I think the concept for this ep was better than the execution - although, Sam and Dean in prison was totally fun to watch, in spite of the lack of strength in the plot.

And Merry Christmas, to you as well!

I like my alternative ending too, or any other ending, simply because by the time Deacon shows up, the ep had taken such a hard turn, for it to end so easily was a bit of a let down. But no, Sam in S2 would not have stepped up to the plate you're right. What about S4 Sam? I think, given a prison story in S4 (or 5!) that Sam would be the one not to be messed with. Here, Sam just wants to be left alone. Kinda hard when you're that tall. : D

The uniform thing kept jumping out at me; Sam's looks like it's going to fall off him sometimes. Not that I would be complaining.

And oh, Sam from S4 in a jumpsuit? I LOVE the visual there, so thank you for that. It honestly hadn't crossed my mind, I was so concentrating on staying in S2, but yeah. He'd be popping through the seams with all those marvelous muscles of his.

Sam is still green at this stage - I love watching him worry, worry, worry. And I totally agree, there's no way Sam would let Dean be bait in S4, certainly not in a prison story.

Hi Sylvia

I had every intention of re-watching the episode, before today, so that I could post comments about it but I have been too busy at work and at home. This time of year is crazy at work and I also had to find to Christmas shop. So, I am pretty sad about not being able to put together my list. Bummer. Or not being able to discuss the episode. I actually haven't seen it in a long time. I am way behind on re-watching Season 2. And, I am sure you aren't surprised to hear that. HA HA.

I loved Season 2 so much. There was so much goodness in Season 2 that I have a difficult time narrowing down my favorite episodes from then.

Anyway, I do remember I liked this episode...but I didn't love it.

However, the next episode you are going to review is my favorite episode of Season 2 and I believe I would rank it number 1 on my list of favorite episodes of the entire series.
It is one of those episodes, that lingered with me for days. It was just heartbreaking and gut wrenching and poignant but it had some hilarious moments as well. Plus...Jensen Ackles brought it home...He completely and totally nailed his performance in "What is and what never should be'. Seriously, how many times can this man break my heart?

Sylvia, I truly hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks again for everything and thanks for sharing a part of yourself with us over the last year or so. I have had so much fun, over the last year since I stumbled across this fabulous website. I am so glad you are a part of Pinkraygun.com.

Take care,
Joan

PS. I hope you are doing well and enjoying a much needed rest. :-)

It is one of those episodes, that lingered with me for days. It was just heartbreaking and gut wrenching and poignant but it had some hilarious moments as well. Plus…Jensen Ackles brought it home…He completely and totally nailed his performance in "What is and what never should be'.

I thoroughly enjoyed this ep for all it was, and the tense scene in the graveyard at the end had me on the edge of my seat. I wasn't sure whether or not the lady lawyer had given Henriksen the right information on which cemetery the boys had gone to, but given the trashy way he treated her, I was thrilled she sent him to the wrong one! I was actually surprised when "bad guy" Deacon turned out to be the man they were there to help, and overjoyed that, once again, the Winchesters got one over on Victor. This ep was entertaining in so many ways (and did you know Tiny was portrayed by their real-life bodyguard, Cliff)?

Merry Christmas, Syl!
